What Is Left When Peru's Flood Waters Recede?

On the outskirts of Lima, hundreds of householders salvage scant belongings in what is left of their homes after the Rimac River burst its banks in recent weeks amid Peru's worst flooding disaster in decades. Many of the hardest hit are those who can least afford it — poor Peruvians who built their homes on cheap land near the river, which runs from Peru's central Andes to the Pacific coast. Simeona Mosquera contemplates her uncertain future, standing in what once was her front room and is now a ruin of mud and debris. Читать дальше...

'Fearless Girl' Extends Face-off with Wall Street's 'Charging Bull'

The globally popular statue of a young girl will keep staring down Wall Street's famed "Charging Bull" through February 2018 instead of being removed this coming Sunday, the mayor said. She's "standing up to fear, standing up to power, being able to find in yourself the strength to do what's right," said Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio, who appeared with the "Fearless Girl" statue Monday on the lower Manhattan traffic island where the two bronze figures face each other. The mayor said the political... Читать дальше...

Last week’s moves stem from a June 19 conflict in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Eight people were killed and 100 others wounded when members of the National Coordinator... Читать дальше...

For Kabul political science student Rahmatullah Amiri, shot three times in a Taliban raid on the American University of Afghanistan last August and still on crutches, restarting classes is the best possible answer to his attackers. "The only thing I can do to tell those terrorists that what they have done is wrong is come back to this university," Amiri, who saw a friend die in front of him in the attack that killed at least 16 people, told Reuters at the campus Monday. The attack shattered the... Читать дальше...

US-backed Force Pauses Fighting at Huge Dam in Northern Syria

U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters pressing an offensive against Islamic State extremists in northern Syria have temporarily suspended operations near the country's largest dam to allow experts to conduct safety inspections of the massive structure. The Tabqa dam is located on the Euphrates river about 40 kilometers upstream from Islamic State's de facto capital, Raqqa. Jihadists have controlled the facility and a nearby airbase since 2014. The temporary stand down Monday by the so-called Syrian Democratic... Читать дальше...

Ankara Has Few Incentives to End EU Refugee Deal, Analysts Say

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly has threatened to end his country's refugee deal with the European Union, as relations continue to plummet. However, such a move may not be in Ankara's interests. Since last year's deal, the flood of refugees and migrants entering Greece and Bulgaria from Turkey has fallen to a trickle. Under the Readmission Agreement, Ankara accepts migrants and refugees who have entered EU countries illegally from Turkish territory, in exchange for Europe accepting vetted refugees from Turkey... Senate Panel Delays Action on Gorsuch as Democratic Opposition Grows

The Senate Judiciary Committee delayed action on President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, as Democrats continued to fume over Republicans' refusal to consider former President Barack Obama's pick for the same vacancy, created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia more than a year ago. Democrats exercised their right Monday to put off committee debate and a vote on Gorsuch for one week as partisan divides deepened on the appellate judge and the possibility appeared to... Will Trump's Cabinet Follow Tillerson's Lead in Media Access?

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has famously declared himself "not a big media press access person," isn't alone in President Donald Trump's Cabinet. But it's too early to call him a trendsetter, either. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine Cho, both with extensive private sector backgrounds, have similarly been press-averse at the beginning of their tenures. Others seem to be following the leads of predecessors. In some cases, it's just too early to tell. ... Читать дальше...

Researchers say they’ve grown beating human heart cells on spinach leaves, using the vascular network of the plant to transport fluids.
