Investors Exhibit 'More Signs of Fatigue Than Euphoria'

Here's how much hope and expectation has been built into the stock market: Big companies are healthy and making fatter profits than Wall Street expected, yet it's barely enough to keep the market from falling. Consider Home Depot, which gave an earnings report on Tuesday that was seemingly fantastic. The retailer made more in profit from May through July than in any other quarter in its history, and its 14 percent rise in earnings per share was stronger than analysts expected. Home Depot at the... Читать дальше...

Business Owners Without Legal Status in US Face Tense Days

Maribel Resendiz and her husband came to the U.S. from Mexico, sold cool drinks to workers in the tomato fields of South Florida and eventually opened a bustling shop in a strip mall offering fruit smoothies and tacos. Now she is preparing for the possibility she'll have to leave it all behind. Resendiz, who is not a legal U.S. resident, recently turned over control of the business in Florida City to her daughter, a citizen. The once-proud shop owner is so afraid of deportation these days that... Читать дальше...

'Sheriff Joe' Could be Pardoned By Trump, or Sentenced in October

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, convicted two weeks ago of criminal contempt for failing to heed a judge's orders, has been branded by his supporters as "America's toughest sheriff." The 85-year-old Arizona law enforcement officer is the subject of speculation over whether President Donald Trump will pardon him next week when he holds a campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton on Wednesday released a statement saying if Trump uses the event to announce a pardon for Arpaio, "then it... Читать дальше...

Battling Demons in Community Looking to Trump for Change

In Grays Harbor County, a rural community on the coast of Washington state, the rate at which people die from despair — from drugs, alcohol and suicide — is nearly twice the national average. The county embraced Donald Trump's call to America's forgotten corners, and flipped Republican in a presidential election for the first time in 90 years.   Many of those caught in the cycle of addiction did not vote; they are either felons or too consumed by the turmoil of trying to claw their way out to be engaged in society. Why Hate Came to the Progressive City of Charlottesville

The white nationalists behind last weekend's violent rally found an appealing target in the historic town of Charlottesville, Virginia. That's where Thomas Jefferson founded a university and where an outspoken, progressive mayor declared his city the "capital of the resistance" to President Donald Trump. For more than a year, the Charlottesville government has also been engaged in contentious public soul searching over its Confederate monuments. The process led to the decision to remove a statue of General Robert E. Читать дальше...

Officials in Venezuela are pointing fingers at each other over who bears responsibility for clashes between inmates and security forces at a prison that left 37 people dead. Interior Minister Nestor Reverol says authorities were forced to take action after the state governor failed to resolve a crisis at the small prison in the southern city of Puerto Ayacucho. White House Aide Bannon: No Military Solution in North Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump's chief White House strategist, Stephen Bannon, says there is no military solution to ending the threat of North Korea's nuclear weapons development, even though Trump has vowed to meet any Pyongyang aggression with “fire and fury like the world has never seen.” Trump traded increasingly bellicose threats with North Korea in recent weeks in the aftermath of the reclusive communist country's two ballistic missile tests last month and its claim it could reach the U.S. mainland with an attack. A spokesman for Deutsche Welle said the broadcaster received initial reports earlier in the week that the site, qantara.de, was unavailable to Egyptian internet users. Christoph Jumpelt told The Associated Press that after conducting tests, Deutsche Welle concluded that the problem wasn't just a technical glitch. Two psychologists who helped design an interrogation program used by the CIA in the U.S. war on terror have settled a lawsuit brought on behalf of three former detainees. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed but attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union called the settlement an "historic victory" in a statement Thursday. "We are coming very close to a decision and I anticipate it in the very near future," Mattis told reporters at a Washington news conference. She explains how Ahmad knocked into a high voltage cable just outside their home — one of thousands that form a deadly web over the streets of their home in Beirut’s densely packed Burj al-Barajneh Palestinian camp. Simple Concoction Found to Halt Fall Armyworm

A farmers' group in South Sudan's Imotong state says it has found a way to combat the dreaded fall armyworm, which has devastated crops across the state. Trump: 'So Foolish' to Remove Civil War Statues Commemorating Losing Side

U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday it is "so foolish" for American cities to be removing statues commemorating Confederate generals and soldiers who fought on the losing side of the country's 19th century Civil War.   "You can't change history," Trump added in a string of Twitter comments,   Trump offered his thoughts on the Confederate memorials in the aftermath of last weekend's deadly street mayhem in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacists were protesting... Analysts: Taliban Letter to Trump Is Tactic to Counter Pressure

The Afghan Taliban's "open letter" to President Donald Trump calling for a total withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country, is aimed at taking pressure off the group as Washington presses Pakistan to crack down on the allied Haqqani terror network, analysts say. The letter, which was made public Tuesday, comes as Trump continues to cobble together his Afghan policy. There had been strong speculation the policy would be released at the NATO summit in late May, but it has yet to be finalized. U.S.... Читать дальше...

Mass Burials Begin in Sierra Leone After Massive Mudslides

Mass burials will begin Thursday for victims of mudslides and floods that took place earlier this week, and officials fear more death and destruction is “imminent.” The death toll from the disaster has risen to at least 300, about a third of whom were children. The mudslides began Monday following heavy rains that collapsed a hillside and washed away homes built precariously atop it. Citizens were told they need to identify their dead family members at the overcrowded central morgue by Wednesday night... Читать дальше...

Anti-Muslim Australian Senator Wears Burqa in Parliament

An Australian senator provoked an angry backlash from lawmakers by wearing a burqa in Parliament on Thursday as part of her campaign for a national ban on Islamic face covers. Pauline Hanson, leader of the anti-Muslim, anti-immigration One Nation minor party, sat wearing the black head-to-ankle garment for more than 10 minutes before taking it off as she rose to explain that she wanted such outfits banned on national security grounds.   “There has been a large majority of Australians [who] wish to see the banning of the burqa,” said Hanson...
