Rose Parade Avoids California Rain as It Welcomes New Year

Flower-covered floats, marching bands and equestrian units celebrated the New Year on a chilly but dry Monday as the 134th Rose Parade slipped through a gap in California's siege of drenching storms. Pasadena's annual floral spectacle offered the optimistic theme of "Turning the Corner" for 2023, and former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords of Arizona, who survived a 2011 shooting, served as grand marshal. "The New Year is a time for renewal, an opportunity for a fresh start," Tournament of... Читать дальше...

Trolling of Female Asian Journalists on Rise as Beijing Seeks to Discredit Media

Increased harassment over the past year directed at journalists and analysts who are women and of Asian descent is likely the result of an orchestrated campaign by the Chinese government, research by a think tank shows. Harassment largely played out on Twitter and ranged from insults about an individual’s appearance to accusations of being a traitor or threats of violence and rape. The aim of the abuse is to silence the women and discredit their critical coverage of China according to the non-partisan... Читать дальше...

North Korea has replaced its second most powerful military official, state media reported. The reshuffling took place at last week’s ruling party annual meeting with Ri Yong Gil replacing Pak Jong Chong, the official KCNA news agency said Sunday. The report did not detail any reasoning for the change. The development came as Kim Jong Uncalled for expanding his country’s nuclear arsenal and developing more powerful intercontinental ballistic missiles in response to what he called hostility from the United States. A Consequential Year for the US Supreme Court

In January, 83-year-old liberal Justice Stephen Breyer announced he was stepping down from the U.S. Supreme Court at the end of the term. The announcement paved the way for President Joe Biden to deliver on a long-touted campaign promise to put the first Black woman on the nation's highest court. Ketanji Brown Jackson, a Harvard-educated federal judge who once clerked for Breyer, was confirmed by the Senate in April. At 52, she could help shape the court for decades to come. But Jackson's trailblazing... Читать дальше...

Nagarathna said the decision was "unlawful" and "an exercise of power, contrary to law."    In November 2016... Читать дальше...

Dubai Ends Alcohol Sales Tax, Fee for Liquor Licenses

Dubai ended its 30% tax on alcohol sales in the sheikhdom Sunday and made its required liquor licenses free to obtain, ending a long-standing source of revenue for its ruling family to apparently further boost tourism to the emirate. The sudden New Year's Day announcement, made by Dubai's two state-linked alcohol retailers, came apparently from a government decree from its ruling Al Maktoum family. However, government officials did not immediately acknowledge the decision and did not respond to questions from The Associated Press. Читать дальше...
