Rwanda Says DR Congo Fighter Jet Violated Its Airspace

Rwanda's government said on Tuesday that a fighter jet from Democratic Republic of Congo had violated its airspace, prompting its defense force to fire in response. A video shared widely on Congolese social media showed a projectile shooting toward an airborne military plane, before exploding in the air near the plane, which continued to fly. Trump Ends Another Legal Challenge to NY Attorney General Probe

Donald Trump has ended his appeal of a court ruling that let New York state's attorney general investigate his real estate business and eventually file a $250 million civil fraud lawsuit against the former U.S. president. A stipulation of voluntary dismissal signed by Trump's lawyer Alina Habba and a lawyer for state Attorney General Letitia James was filed on Tuesday with the federal appeals court in Manhattan. Climate Change Drives Kashmir Spice Farmers Indoors

Abdul Majeed Wani lifts a plastic box from the ground and places it on one of the steel shelves adjacent to the walls of his house in the Pampore area of Pulwama district on the Indian side of Kashmir.  The 65-year-old farmer has dozens of such boxes lying under an open sky. Malawi Makes Fresh Appeal for Cholera Vaccine

Malawi has appealed for more than 7 million additional doses of cholera vaccine from the World Health Organization as it struggles to control a record outbreak of the bacterial illness. The WHO donated almost 3 million doses of the vaccine to Malawi in November but those were quickly used up. Since March of last year, almost 30,000 people have been infected and nearly 1,000 have died. Uncertainty Shrouds Myanmar Elections

A Myanmar junta spokesperson has told VOA’s Burmese service that there is uncertainty over whether general elections will be held this year, due to what he calls issues regarding voter registration and opposition attacks surging across the country. When pressed on the subject, Major General Zaw Min Tun, said, “I can’t say for sure right now. US, 8 States Sue Google on Digital Ad Business Dominance

The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Alphabet's GOOGL.O Google on Tuesday over allegations that the company abused its dominance of the digital advertising business, according to a court document. "Google has used anticompetitive, exclusionary, and unlawful means to eliminate or severely diminish any threat to its dominance over digital advertising technologies," the government said in its antitrust complaint. US Military Strike in Somalia Kills 2 Militants

The United States has reported conducting a new airstrike against al-Shabab in Somalia on January 23, killing two militants.  In a statement, the U.S. military's Africa Command, known as AFRICOM, said it conducted a "collective self-defense" strike against al-Shabab following a request from the Somalian government. Sweden and Finland's NATO membership is in doubt with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voicing opposition after demonstrators burned a Quran in Stockholm. Finland's Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told a news conference Tuesday that he did not expect any progress on Finland and Sweden's NATO membership bid until after the Turkish elections later this year. The U.N. refugee agency, the UNHCR, is condemning escalating violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that has killed hundreds of civilians and forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes in search of safety.  More than 130 armed groups operating in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are creating havoc and terrorizing the population with their brutal, frequent attacks. Cameroon has denied an announcement that Canada will mediate the African country's separatist conflict, saying such a role was never mandated. Repatriated Somali Refugees Return to Kenya's Camps as Ravaging Drought Continues

Since Kenya began its voluntary refugee repatriation program in 2017, more than 85,000 Somali refugees have resettled back home. But due to record drought in the Horn of Africa, thousands of them have returned to Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp to seek relief. As Juma Majanga reports from Dadaab, those who have returned are finding themselves locked out of aid programs because Kenya has banned the registration of new refugees.

Campaign group Fortify Rights and 16 Myanmar nationals have filed a genocide and war crimes complaint against Myanmar’s military leaders in Germany in the latest bid to leverage the principle of universal jurisdiction against the country’s generals. Fortify Rights announced the case Tuesday in Thailand, which shares a long and porous border with Myanmar, and says a 215-page complaint was filed with Germany’s federal public prosecutor on January 20. Pakistan Restores Power but Cause of Breakdown Remains Mystery

Police: Kite-Fighting String Responsible for India Festival Deaths

India’s annual kite-flying competition turned deadly this year as competitors used specially-coated strings to disable their opponents kites.  Police say six people were killed in the Indian state of Gujarat during the January 14 festival after their throats were sliced by glass-coated kite strings.  Three children, including a two-year-old baby, were among those killed after the glass-encrusted razor-sharp strings—used by “kite fighters” participating in the Uttarayan festival—got entangled around their necks and slit their throats. Seven Killed in Shootings at Northern California Agricultural Sites

Police in the U.S. state of California said seven people were killed Monday in two related shootings at agricultural facilities.  The shootings happened in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco.
