An Alaska Airlines flight bound for San Francisco was diverted to Portland, Oregon, after an off-duty pilot inside the flight deck attempted to disable the aircraft engines. Nigeria has recorded more than 800 incidents of extrajudicial killings across the country in the last three years, according to the international human rights group Global Rights.  The Mass Atrocities Casualties report published by Global Rights says 848 extrajudicial executions took place in Nigeria between 2020 and June 2023, with 127 cases in the first half of this year alone. A new report by an EU-based think tank is proposing a new source of revenue for countries by imposing a tax on the super-rich. Governments around the world should engage in a coordinated effort to prevent tax evasion and create a global minimum tax on billionaires that could raise $250 billion annually, according to the EU Tax Observatory. A Russian court on Monday extended the detention of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alsu Kurmasheva until December. Kurmasheva was detained by police last week on charges of failing to register as a foreign agent. Kurmasheva is believed to be the first person taken into custody for failing to comply with the registry. On Monday, a court in the Russian city of Kazan rejected a bid by Kurmasheva’s lawyer to allow Kurmasheva to be freed pending trial, RFE/RL reported. The United Auto Workers union has once again escalated its strikes against big Detroit automakers, this time adding a factory that makes Ram pickup trucks for Stellantis.   The union says that 6,800 members walked out Monday morning and shut down the Sterling Heights, Michigan, Assembly Plant, a huge profit center for the company.   The newest strike action comes just three days after union President Shawn Fain reported progress in talks with General Motors and Stellantis but said the companies will have to make better offers. Security in Haiti, where violent gangs control large swathes of the country, has collapsed even further, with the number of major crimes hitting "record highs," the U.N. representative to the impoverished Caribbean nation warned Monday. Sonoma State University, a public institution in California, is offering guaranteed admission to any high school student who meets the minimum academic standards. In doing so, it joins university systems like the State University of New York, which sent 125,000 automatic acceptance letters last year. The scheme could expand access to education by reaching students who otherwise wouldn’t or couldn’t apply. Bobi, the world's oldest dog, has died aged 31 in Portugal, Guinness World Records said on Monday. Police in Cyprus on Monday arrested ten individuals suspected of running a crime gang trafficking migrants, as the island saw a fresh spike in arrivals over the weekend. Cyprus, which lies at the crossroads of three continents, has seen irregular migration rise since 2017. Colombian President Gustavo Petro will visit China this week, Beijing's foreign ministry said Monday, with the leftist leader seeking to strengthen ties with the world's second-largest economy.
