Glencore's Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia has closed two shafts at its Nkana mine, the company said on Thursday, a move that an opposition leader said had led to 1 400 job losses. A Mopani spokesman would not specify the number of workers affected, saying they were not employees of the company.

Mining production decreased by 4.2% year-on-year in June, following May’s 1.5% year-on-year dip. Mining production and sales statistics published by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Thursday shows that gold was the largest negative contributor at -16% and contributing -2.1 percentage points, followed by diamonds at -33.2% and contributing -1.7 percentage points.

TSX-V-listed Minera Alamos on Thursday announced that the Mexico federal agency, Semarnat, had approved the environmental impact statement for the Santana gold project. The permit, together with the change of land use notification received in June, now provides the company with the key approvals necessary for the construction of a commercial-scale mine and gold heap-leach processing facility.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has rejected a request by environmental groups to reconsider the mine and dam safety permits for the NorthMet copper/nickel project. Commenting on the department’s decision, developer PolyMet Mining president and CEO Jon Cherry said in a statement that the permits were issued after a comprehensive and lengthy environmental review and permitting process that involved “considerable” public involvement and, in the case of the dam safety permit, independent review by outside experts.

ASX-listed Danakali on Thursday announced that the African Export Import Bank (Afreximbank) had granted credit approval to provide preferred power contractor Inglett & Stubbs International (ISI) with a $42-million guarantee that would facilitate senior debt funding for the Colluli sulphate of potash project’s power plant. The Public Authority for Mining in Oman has indicated that it will grant London-listed Savannah Resources' subsidiary two mining licences for its high-grade copper developments – Mahab 4 and Maqail South, near the Port of Sohar. The licences are expected to be granted once new licensing fees have been set under the new mining law, which came into effect on March 14.

Close on the heels of starting the auction process for 27 coal mines, India’s Coal Ministry has announced it is relaxing auction, and subsequent contract, rules to ensure a higher number of bids. “The coal mines on offer include some mines that have remained unsold at previous auctions. Most of these mines are categorised as Schedule III mines, which means that these could be brought into production in four to five years,” a Ministry official said this week.

ASX-listed uranium miner Paladin on Thursday issued an amendment to the consent solicitation to introduce a consent fee payable to each noteholder who votes in favour of the resolution set out in the consent solicitation. In July, Paladin launched a consent solicitation to its noteholders pursuant to which it sought consent to certain waivers and release under the terms of the note to facilitate the sale of its shares in Paladin (Africa) to Lotus Resources, a subsidiary of Hylea Metals.

Base metals miner First Quantum has terminated its earn-in option over the Orquideas copper/molybdenum concession of Luminex Resources in Ecuador. First Quantum exited the option after the first five drill holes at Orquideas failed to produce significant mineralised intercepts, TSX-V-listed Luminex said on Wednesday.

Ahead of the release of its results for the six months ended June 30, next week, JSE- and NYSE-listed Gold Fields on Thursday advised shareholders that it expected to report headline earnings per share (HEPS) of $0.05. This is lower than the HEPS of $0.08 reported for the six months ended June 30, 2018.

TSX- and Aim-listed Avesoro Resources expects to reap the benefit of its operational transition to contractor mining at the New Liberty and Youga mines, in Liberia and Burkina Faso, respectively, during the second half of the year. CEO Serhan Umurhan on Thursday said the transition during the second quarter should effect various operational and cost improvements, including increased material movement at both mines.

LSE- and Nasdaq-listed specialist alloy producer Afarak on Wednesday warned that its financial performance for the second quarter had been adversely impacted on by the challenges at the Mogale smelter, in South Africa. Irregular supply of electricity and associated high costs have caused underperformance from the smelter, exacerbated by unfavourable macro conditions such as sustained weak ferrochrome prices and US/China trade uncertainties.

AngloGold Ashanti set a new safety record, kept key projects on track and lifted second-quarter production and cash flow in the three months to June 30, the Johannesburg- and New York-listed gold mining company said on Thursday. The company achieved four consecutive quarters and a total of 449 days without a fatality, a first in AngloGold Ashanti’s history.

Swiss-listed Glencore has lost its bid to appoint a replacement nominee to the board of ASX-listed Ironbark Zinc. The two companies earlier this year entered into arbitration following the resignation of Glencore nominee David Kelly from the Ironbark board in October of last year.

Diamond miner Lucapa Diamond Company has reported revenue of A$8.8-million from the latest sale of diamonds from its Lulo and Mothae mines, in Angola and Lesotho respectively. The ASX-listed company on Thursday reported that a parcel of 3 558 ct of Lulo diamonds was sold for gross proceeds of A$6.3-million, representing an average price of A$1 768/ct, while a further 4 376 ct of Mothae diamonds raised a further A$2.5-million in revenue, representing an average price of A$579/ct.

ASX-listed Metminco has declared its takeover offer for target Andes Resources to be unconditional. Under the terms of the off-market agreement Metminco would issue 25 of its own shares for every Andes share held, with the merger to be conditional on a number of conditions, including a minimum 90% acceptance and the completion of a total of A$4-million capital raise.

Diversified miner BHP has approved a $283-million spend to develop the Ruby oil and gas project, in Trinidad and Tobago. BHP, which holds a 68.46% interest in the project, on Thursday said that the total investment for the Ruby oil and gas project would amount to $500-million.

Canadian gold miner Iamgold has lowered its production guidance for the year, to reflect the suspension of mining activities at the Rosebel mine, in Suriname, where an illegal miner died last week, and lower production from Westwood, in Canada. The new attributable guidance is between 765 000 oz and 810 000 oz, compared with the previous forecast of 810 000 oz to 870 000 oz.

Copper and molybdenum miner Taseko has posted a net loss of C$11.01-million in the second quarter ended June 30, compared with a loss of C$4.67-million a year earlier, which the miner mainly attributed to higher depletion and amortisation expenses. Revenue fell from C$94.27-million in the second quarter of 2018, to C$86.52-million in the quarter under review, in line with copper prices that were about 11% lower on changes in Chinese economic demand and global trade policies.
