A 14.83-ct pink gem found and cut by Alrosa is expected to fetch one of the highest prices ever for a diamond when the Russian company puts it up for sale later this year. The oval stone, named The Spirit of the Rose, has been certified by the Gemological Institute of America as fancy vivid purple-pink with excellent clarity, excellent polish and very good symmetry, said Alrosa spokeswoman Evgeniya Kozenko. The sale is planned for November, she said.

Civil rights organisation AfriForum has intensified its efforts to halt the development of a planned coal mine near the Kruger National Park after the organisation became aware of alleged violations by Singo Consulting, which had been appointed by Manzolwandle Investments to undertake an environmental-impact assessment (EIA) for the project. AfriForum on Wednesday laid a criminal charge against Singo at the Komatipoort police station, in Mpumalanga, stating that Singo had allegedly committed plagiarism in the EIA.

Diversified miner Exxaro Resources expects its headline earnings per share (HEPS) for the six months ended June 30 to be between 35% and 47% higher year-on-year. HEPS will be between R16.50 and R17.90, compared with the HEPS of R12 reported for the six months ended June 30, 2018.

TSX-listed mine development company NorZinc has been issued a draft permit for the all-season road to its Prairie Creek mine, in the Northwest Territories, and expects to have the final permits in hand early in the fourth quarter. The Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board issued the draft permits and Parks Canada has indicated that it will issue its draft permits shortly.

Copper exports from the port of Matarani have resumed after anti-mining protests that had blocked key infrastructure in the country's southern copper belt eased over the weekend, a spokeswoman for the port operator said on Tuesday. Shipments from four mines that produce about half of Peru's copper - Freeport-McMoRan's Cerro Verde deposit, MMG's Las Bambas, Glencore's Antapaccay and Hudbay Mineral's Constancia - had been suspended for nearly three weeks due to the unrest.

Global commodity miner and trader Glencore on Wednesday lost its case to stop Australian tax authorities using business information that was leaked as part of the so-called Paradise Papers. Glencore had argued that information revealed by the Paradise Papers - a leaked dossier that included information on clients of the Appleby law firm in Bermuda - should not be available to tax authorities as the information had been stolen.

Precious metals miner Hochschild Mining reported lower first-half pretax profit on Wednesday, as a drop in the average price of silver led to lower group production. Hochschild's post-exceptional profit before income tax fell 23.5% to $29.5-million for the six months ended June 30, as the average price of silver fell 7%.

Rating agency Fitch Solutions believes that diversified miner BHP will benefit from its diversified portfolio of large, long-life and low cost assets as it continues to outperform its peers in terms of liquidity. Fitch on Wednesday said that BHP’s strong performance in the 2018 financial year was a testament to this view, highlighted by the fact that the miner managed to reduce its debt substantially during the fiscal period.

China will launch a new round of safety inspections on coal mines across the country from late August until end-September, the country's coal mine safety watchdog said on Wednesday. The checks follow a spate of fatal coal mine accidents that stirred concerns over poor safety conditions, particularly at small mines.

Canadian diamond miner Mountain Province is no longer complying with the minimum bid price requirement of the Nasdaq and has until February 10 to regain compliance with the stock exchange’s listing rules. The share price of ASX-listed Cape Lambert tumbled by nearly 13% on Wednesday announced plans to abandon financing efforts for the Kipushi cobalt/copper tailings project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to focus on the Marampa iron-ore project, in Sierra Leone.
