London-listed exploration company Power Metal Resources has renewed key prospecting licences at the Molopo Farms Complex project, in southwestern Botswana, for two years. Renewal documentation has been received in respect of prospecting licence 310/2016 and prospecting licence 311/2016, with the latter covering the area where drilling was completed in 2021 from which significant nickel intersections were confirmed.

London-listed Galileo Resources has asked independent consultants Addison Mining Services and GeoQuest to start compiling historical drilling data on the Luansobe copper project, in Zambia. Preliminary analysis suggests the deposit has a strike length of up to 3 km and extends to a depth of at least 1 250 m, with some exceptional drill intercepts, including 18.6 m grading 3.24% copper.

New Czech Environment Minister Anna Hubackova said on Thursday she was ready to hold talks with Poland next week to overcome a dispute over Poland's open-pit coal mine Turow near the two countries' border. Talks between the central European allies in the dispute faltered last year, with the Czech Republic rejecting an amended Polish proposal in November. A new Czech government took over in December following an October election.

Dual-listed Aura Energy has appointed Dr Will Goodall as acting CEO, to fulfil the roles and responsibilities of the previous CEO until the company appoints a board level MD and CEO during the first half of this year. Goodall will attend board meetings during this time and will continue to drive Aura towards expanding the Tiris uranium resource and preparing the company for production of uranium at its flagship Tiris project in Mauritania.

The anti-government protests that rocked Kazakhstan in recent days have not had a major impact on the overall business of the world’s top uranium producer and Kazatomprom said on Thursday that it had not experienced any delays or disruptions to production, deliveries, or sales plans. The national atomic company noted that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev had stressed that all necessary measures would be taken to restore the trust of domestic and foreign investors after an attempted coup d’etat.

Russian diamond producer Alrosa on Thursday announced strong rough and polished diamond sales, which not only shot past the Covid-hit 2020 levels, but also came in substantially higher than sales in pre-pandemic 2019. Alrosa reported total sales of $4.17-billion, including rough diamond sales of $3.98-billion and polished sales of $192-million, for 2021.

LSE-listed titanium minerals and zircon producer Kenmare Resources increased its 2021 production by 30% year-on-year, owing to a record 1.55-million tonnes being mined, and a 19% increase in ore grades to 4.63% as a result of wet concentrator plant (WCP) B’s relocation to the high-grade Pilivili ore zone in the third quarter of 2020. The recent civil unrest in Kazakhstan – the world’s biggest producer of uranium – underscores the need for increased regional diversification of supply, says Toronto-listed developer GoviEx Uranium, which owns projects in Niger, Zambia and Mali. LSE-listed mineral explorer Power Metal Resources reports that two prospecting licences (PLs) for its 100%-owned Tati project have now been successfully transferred into Tati Greenstone Resources (TGR) – a wholly-owned private Botswana-based subsidiary of Power Metal. On July 28, 2021, Power Metal exercised an option to acquire a 100% interest in the Tati project, and the process was commenced to transfer the two project PLs (PL 126/2019 and PL 127/2019) into TGR.

The World Gold Council (WGC) highlights in its latest outlook for gold that the precious metal may well face similar dynamics to those of last year as competing forces both support and curtail its performance. Barrick Gold Corp and Rio Tinto Group have expressed interest in Nigeria’s largely untapped mining sector, according to the West African nation’s mining minister. “They are looking at the possibility of coming to look at opportunities in Nigeria,” Olamilekan Adegbite said in an interview at a mining conference in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. Serbia will decide whether Rio Tinto can proceed with developing a lithium mine in the country after a general election in April, its prime minister told Reuters, as protests by local communities continued. Global miner Rio Tinto committed $2.4-billion to develop a lithium-borates project near Loznica in the western Jadar valley in 2021.

India's Adani Group and South Korean steel major POSCO have signed an agreement to explore opportunities, including setting up of an integrated steel mill at the western state of Gujarat, the companies said in a statement on Thursday. The investment is estimated to be of about $5-billion, the statement said, adding that the non-binding agreement intends to help both companies collaborate further in various industries such as renewable energy, hydrogen, and logistics.

Diversified major BHP on Thursday announced that it would move its $3.6-billion South Flank mine, in the Pilbara, to autonomous haulage. The miner said that autonomous haulage will be phased in across five autonomous operation zones (AOZs), beginning in June 2022, and by September 2023, the entire fleet of 41 Komatsu 930e haul trucks at South Flank will have been converted for autonomous operation, along with about 180 other pieces of equipment that support mining operations including excavators...
