Thungela Resources is working to remedy the impact of a toxic spill in February from an old coal mine in South Africa’s eastern Mpumalanga province, Chief Executive Officer July Ndlovu said. Documents released by a shareholder activist organization on Tuesday show that Thungela -- a coal spinoff from Anglo American Plc -- has been ordered to repair the environmental damage or face legal action. Thungela fell as much as 11% in Johannesburg.

Explorer and developer African Pioneer has started a 25- to 30-hole shallow diamond drilling programme on the Ongombo project in Namibia, with six holes thus far intersecting “encouraging” sulphide mineralisation with chalcopyrite at shallow depths. With projects also in Botswana and Zambia, African Pioneer notes that the drill programme is intended to test near-surface oxide and sulphide copper/gold mineralisation, with visual estimates of chalcopyrite content in the mineralised zones indicating notable quantities of copper sulphide, to date.

Eskom CEO André de Ruyter has highlighted three key resource advantages that he argues could transform the coal province of Mpumalanga into a global “flagship” of the just energy transition. In an address to the Mpumalanga Energy Summit, De Ruyter argued that the province’s skilled human resources, its access to grid infrastructure and its solar and wind resources, which were superior to those in most other jurisdictions, even if not the best in the country, placed it in a strong position to transition to renewables.

Thermal coal, blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking and its raw materials are the segments of the metals and mining sector that are most vulnerable to long-term climate risks owing to their large direct emissions, credit ratings agency Fitch Ratings says. Demand for many nonferrous metals will remain high in the long term owing to their role in the low-carbon transition, even though producers will need to decarbonise their mining and processing, the agency adds.

Aspasa, formerly known as the Aggregate and Sand Producers Association of South Africa, reports that miners of building material commodities are standing ready to assist the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government and construction firms to repair roads and essential infrastructure that was damaged in severe recent floods. Sand and aggregates comprise about 70% by volume of the material that will be needed for ground stabilisation, roadworks and construction work to repair damaged infrastructure.

Chile’s government is looking at a gradual implementation for a proposed ban on mining near glaciers in order to limit the impact on some of the world’s biggest copper mines and their planned projects high in the Andes. In an interview Monday, Mining Minister Marcela Hernando identified about 20 mining sites that are in protected areas, some of them close to glaciers, such as Codelco’s El Teniente and Andina and Anglo American's Los Bronces. “There has to be a period for that transition,” she said. An engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contractor has been appointed to design and construct a lithium pilot processing plant at the Uis mine in Namibia, technology metals mining company AfriTin Mining stated on Tuesday. This follows metallurgical test work results of the London Aim-listed mining and exploration company showing the successful production of a petalite lithium concentrate, indicating the potential for a lithium byproduct at the company’s flagship polymetallic Uis.

Diversified miner Rio Tinto and petroleum major BP will collaborate on a one-year biofuel trial in an effort to reduce carbon emissions from Rio’s marine fleet. Under the trial, BP is supplying marine biofuel that will be trialled on Rio’s RTM Tasman vessel on a mix of Transatlantic and Atlantic-Pacific routes, in one of the longest-duration marine biofuel trials to date.
