Investment adviser Appian Capital Advisory, which provides services to long-term value-focused private equity funds that invest solely in mining and mining-related companies, has announced the appointment of new private equity MD Antti Grönlund.  Based in London, Grönlund will play a key part in Appian’s strategy and operations. He will be responsible for originating, evaluating, structuring, executing, and monitoring private equity investments at the firm, as well as overseeing the global finance team.

A possible ban on Russian supplies by the London Metal Exchange would be a seismic event for the metals industry, cutting some of the world’s biggest companies off from the main global marketplace. The exchange has yet to make a decision, but on Thursday launched a formal three-week discussion process on the possibility of banning Russian metal, potentially as soon as next month.

RioZim has bought Sperrgebiet Diamond Mine in Namibia as the Zimbabwean group seeks to expand in Africa. “The group has been trying to broaden its footprint in the mining industry in Africa and this acquisition was part of the strategy,” Tawanda Andrew Chiurayi, RioZim’s group company secretary, said in a written response to questions from Bloomberg News. “We also want to diversify our assets and geographies.”

Bullion major Barrick Gold has reached the seventeenth anniversary since it poured the first gold at its Veladero mine, in Argentina, and while the company remains committed to the asset, CEO Mark Bristow has flagged concerns about the future of mining in the South American country. In a statement issued following a media briefing at the weekend, Bristow said that Barrick, which was exploring in San Juan and across the country, had “raised concerns about the mining industry’s viability”.

Diversified mining major Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore subsidiary has implemented contingency plans to safeguard its assets and minimise the impact on operations following the notice of force majeure from State-owned Transnet on October 7 owing to strike action by Transnet’s unions.  As a result of the disruption to Transnet’s rail and port services, the estimated impact on Kumba’s production is about 50 000 t/d for the first seven days and thereafter, about 90 000 t/d.

ASX-listed Australian Pacific has completed the placement of more than 294.3-million fully paid ordinary shares as part of its fully underwritten pro rata renounceable entitlement offer to raise A$100-million. The company in September struck a deal with two of its suitors and its creditor and shareholder Trepang Services, which could see the Dartbrook mine be re-commissioned as a coal producing asset.

ASX-listed Aurelia Metals on Monday said it was considering a ‘range of funding options’ for its Federation project, in New South Wales, following a positive feasibility study (FS). The study was based on the development of an underground mining operation at the Federal deposit, with the ore to be trucked to existing infrastructure at Aurelia’s Peak mill to produce gold dore and separate lead, copper and zinc concentrates, while the remaining ore would be directed to the Hera plant to produce gold dore and lead/zinc concentrate.

Brazilian conglomerate Cosan said on Friday it had acquired a 4.9% stake in Vale and intends to increase its bet in the mining company. The deal marks a major breakthrough in Cosan's push into the iron ore industry, bolstered by one of the world's largest miners. Cosan said its stake in Vale could reach 6.5%, pending approval from Brazil's antitrust watchdog.

Peru will maintain licences for the Quellaveco copper mine owned by Anglo American and Mitsubishi companies, Prime Minister Anibal Torres said on Sunday on social media. The remarks come two days after global miner Anglo American expressed concern that the Peruvian government might be reconsidering the company's license to use water for its copper mine in southern Peru.

hile's Mining Minister announced on Friday the permanent closure of mining stopes directly related to a giant sinkhole that appeared in the northern part of the country in July. Mining Minister Marcela Hernando made the announcement after meeting with union members, mine workers and technical experts studying the sinkhole.

The federal government has opened consultation on draft legislation to reward industrial facilities that stay below their emissions baselines, and give other facilities a new, low-cost way of reducing net emissions. The draft Safeguard Mechanism (Crediting) Amendment Bill 2022 provides a legal architecture for new Safeguard Mechanism Credits, allowing for tradeable credits which facilities with relatively low-cost abatement can sell to others that currently have more costly or limited options.

Global miners operating in Zimbabwe will have to pay some of their royalties in refined metal rather than cash, the country's president wrote in a newspaper on Sunday, as the country struggles to benefit from demand for its resources. Zimbabwe has abundant reserves of minerals such as gold and platinum group metals (PGM), but power supply problems, a lack of ancillary industries to support mining and currency fluctuations have prevented it from profiting from a resource boom.
