The Copper Mark has launched a pilot programme to extend its assurance framework for responsible production to molybdenum, nickel and zinc, with producers of these metals soon able to achieve their respective ‘mark’. The pilot is the result of a deepening collaboration between the Copper Mark, the International Molybdenum Association, the Nickel Institute and the International Zinc Association to promote sustainable and responsible production and sourcing practices within the copper, molybdenum, nickel and zinc value chains.

Chile is close to achieving a consensus on how much to hike royalties in the mining sector, Mining Minister Marcela Hernando said on Tuesday, a decision that could have a significant impact on mining majors such as BHP and Antofagasta. Discussions have been held with the finance ministry on a government aim to gain more revenues for the country from mining, Hernando told an event in London during industry gathering LME Week, without giving details.

Rio Tinto reiterated its offer to buy out Canadian miner Turquoise Hill Resources for $3.3-billion, a day after proxy advisor Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) recommended voting against the deal. In a letter addressed to Turquoise Hill shareholders, Rio Tinto said ISS's final conclusion is based on "flawed logic".

London- and Johannesburg-listed Jubilee Metals Group has met its production targets for the financial year ended June 30, after having completed its capitalisation and expansion programme. Over the past 18 months, the company implemented a £58-million capital expansion (capex_ project to acquire and refurbish processing facilities in South Africa’s Bushveld Complex and in Zambia.

Copper prices slipped on Tuesday as the market focused on slowing growth and demand around the world, though some price support was provided by low stock levels in warehouses registered with the London Metal Exchange (LME). Benchmark copper on the LME was down 1.5% at $7 445 a tonne in official open-outcry trading. Namibian copper exploration and development company Omico Mining has appointed Ingo Hofmaier CEO. The company says Hofmaier is well-regarded in the natural resources industry with over 20 years’ general management, corporate finance and investment banking experience across Africa, Asia and South America.

LSE-listed Kavango Resources has entered into a strategic financing agreement to raise a further £500 000. Under the terms of the agreement, the company, which explores for base and precious metals in Botswana, will issue about 27.78-million shares to strategic investor Arigo Capital.

Workers at BHP Group's Queensland coal mines have voted overwhelmingly in favour of job security protections, including shift length stoppages and a ban on non-rostered overtime, the Mining & Energy Union said in a statement on Tuesday. The union said 90% of voters supported stoppages of one to six hours, while 94% voted for bans on non-rostered overtime, among other actions.

Jetti Resources, which has developed a breakthrough copper extraction technology, announced on Monday that it had raised $100-million in its Series D financing. The funds would be used to continue the rapid deployment of Jetti’s technology at copper mines.

TSX-listed Lundin Gold has completed the south ventilation raise (SVR) at its Fruta del Norte gold mine, in south-east Ecuador, which will allow for the entirety of the deposit to be accessed and mine. The SVR has been under construction for the past three years, during which the project encountered delays owing to Covid and various technical challenges.

ASX-listed Australian Pacific Coal on Tuesday told shareholders that the joint venture (JV) managers of Dartbrook coal operations is hoping to restart underground mining within the next 12 months. Australian Pacific’s comments comes following an announcement by the New South Wales government that it would prohibit future opencut mining operations at Dartbrook, by way of amending the state planning policy.

The International Copper Association (ICA) has elected Shehzad Bharmal, senior VP base metals of Canadian miner Teck Resources, as its chairperson of the board. He will serve in this capacity for two years. Bharmal is replacing Steve Higgins, senior VP and chief administrative officer of Freeport-McMoRan, who has served for the last two years.

Dual-listed Lithium Americas has reported two non-workplace-related fatalities at its Cauchari-Olaroz lithium project, in Argentina, at the weekend. The two separate incidents occurred at the camp. “It is with deep sadness that we report the tragic loss of two contractors and colleagues at Caucharí-Olaroz. Our thoughts are with their families and friends and our team in Argentina at this difficult time,” said Lithium Americas president and CEO Jonathan Evans.

Chile's Codelco, the world's largest copper miner expects copper demand in China, its main consumer, to be resilient, despite slower economic growth there, its chairman Maximo Pacheco told Reuters. China buys about half of Codelco's production and also accounts for about half of global copper consumption, which analysts estimate will be around 25-million tonnes this year. Pacheco said he was "very confident about China's economy", adding the other half of Codelco's production went to other Asian countries, Europe and South America.

Residents of Ecuador's capital Quito on Monday delivered hundreds of thousands of signatures to the country's electoral court in a bid to ban mining in one of the Andean country's most biodiverse areas. The signatories, who come from rural areas in northwest Quito, hope to block six gold-mining concessions in the Choco Andino forest, citing threats to water sources, nature and their local businesses.

ASX-listed Bowen Coking Coal has shipped the first coal from its Broadmeadow East (BME) mine through the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT), in Queensland. Coal mining at BME started in July this year, and is the first pit to come on-line as part of Bowen Coking Coal’s greater Burton Complex, in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. It is the company’s second operating mine, following first production and sales from the Bluff mine in June 2022.

Energy major Woodside has announced a strategic collaboration with US-based carbon capture and transformation company LanzaTech. Under the terms of a strategic framework agreement signed this week, and subject to a positive final investment decision, Woodside will collaborate with LanzaTech on the design, construction, ownership and maintenance and operation of pilot facilities relating to LanzaTech’s technologies.
