Chilean State-owned Codelco, the world's largest copper miner, on Tuesday confirmed to Reuters that it will extend maintenance work at its Chuquicamata smelter to 135 days, from an initially planned 90-day stoppage. Codelco has warned of further operational issues because of the planned work, after its accumulated copper output from January to September fell 10% year-on-year partly due to issues at Chuquicamata's refinery and smelter.

Peabody Energy, the biggest US coal miner, will probably start paying dividends next year after using growing cash holdings to pay off debt, according to Lucas Pipes, an analyst with B Riley Securities. Some of Peabody’s debt covenants include restrictions on returning capital to shareholders but the company has plans to retire all senior secured debt within a year. The only liabilities expected to remain would be convertible notes issued in 2020, CFO Mark Spurbeck said during an earnings call.

Zimbabwe has passed regulations allowing the state to collect mining royalties partly in the form of minerals, according to a government notice seen by Reuters on Tuesday, as the country seeks to build a reserve of precious metals. The southern African country has struggled to capitalise on its significant mineral reserves and a resource boom due to policy uncertainty, a lack of ancillary industries to support mining, currency volatility and electricity shortages.

The Kamoa-Kakula Mining Complex, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, produced 33 379 t of filtered copper-in-concentrate in October. At the end of October, there was an additional 5 786 t of floated, but not yet filtered, copper in inventory. This marks the second month in a row that floated and filtered copper production from the complex has exceeded 400 000 t on an annualised basis.

A report by the World Gold Council (WGC) into climate change and gold (WGC) finds that the gold sector will likely require more consistent and systematic planning and wider collaboration, including closer engagement on climate-related risks with local communities to deal with climate change risks. TSX- and NYSE-listed gold-focused, emerging senior streaming and royalty company Triple Flag Precious Metals sold 19 523 gold-equivalent ounces (GEO) in the third quarter, down slightly from the 20 746 GEO sold in the corresponding period in 2021. Of this, gold comprised 11 918 GEOs and silver 6 134 GEOs.

A train carrying export coal en route to Richards Bay derailed outside Intshamanzi, near Ulundi, on the morning of November 8, State-owned Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has reported. Response teams have been activated and no injuries have been reported.

Canadian precious metals miner Yamana Gold on Tuesday announced that it had entered into an arrangement agreement with Agnico Eagle Mines and Pan American Silver and that it had changed its recommendation on the pending Gold Fields transaction. Pan American and Agnico Eagle on Friday approached Yamana with a cash-and-share offer, valued at C$5.02 a share, or $4.8-billion. Yamana has determined that the offer constituted a “superior proposal” to that of Gold Fields.

Aim-listed Tertiary Minerals has announced provisional results from its detailed soil sampling programme at the Jacks copper project, in Zambia, and the definition of multiple copper soil anomalies in different areas of the exploration licence. The soil sampling programme was completed on schedule and on budget.

Canada-based miner Centerra Gold remains on track to achieve its revised 2022 guidance, which was lowered in August after the suspension of certain operations at its Öksüt mine, in Türkiye. The company is targeting between 245 000 oz and 265 000 oz  of gold this year, compared with the initial guidance of 400 00 oz to 450 000 oz. Interim president and CEO Paul Wright reported on Monday that the retrofit of the ADR plant at Öksüt would be completed in late 2022.

Green energy developer Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has signed a binding framework agreement with the government of Kenya on the sidelines of COP27 to fast track Kenya’s development of an affordable green fertiliser supply chain and other green hydrogen-based industries and its derivatives. The signing of the Framework Agreement was witnessed by the Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto and Fortescue executive chairperson Dr Andrew Forrest.

Chile's Codelco, the world's biggest copper miner, has proposed a premium of $140 a tonne for 2023 supplies to at least two Chinese customers, a 33.3% increase from this year, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The proposed premium, up from $105 a tonne this year, is paid on top of London Metal Exchange (LME) copper prices CMCU3 for physical delivery of copper cathodes into China, the world's top copper consumer, and is a widely watched industry benchmark.

TSX-V-listed SilverCrest Metals has declared commercial production at its Las Chispas mine, in Mexico, having achieved a continuous two-month period operating the processing plant at a minimum capacity of 80%. The plant’s nameplate design capacity is 1 250 t/d or 1 000 t/d.

Nickel and copper explorer Magna Mining has closed the acquisition of Lonmin Canada (Loncan), handing the company the Denison project in Sudbury, Ontario. Magna acquired Loncan for C$16-million, comprising a closing payment of C$13-million and a deferred payment of C$3-million, from Sibanye Stillwater.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (Arena) has announced A$947 035 in funding to ASX-listed Calix to evaluate the feasibility of a low emissions method for reducing iron. A A$1.96-million pre-front end engineering and design (pre-FEED) and FEED study will scope the design for a proposed demonstration scale hydrogen direct reduced iron (HDRI) production plant utilising Calix’s proprietary Zero Emissions Steel Technology (ZESTY).

Canadian uranium miner Cameco has signed a uranium supply agreement with the China Nuclear International Corporation, a subsidiary of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) – one of the country’s biggest nuclear power operators. The contract was finalised earlier this year and was marked as part of the China International Import Expo 2022.

As the London Metal Exchange (LME) wades through the fallout of this year’s nickel crisis, its American rival is gaining ground. Chicago-based CME Group Inc. has successful copper and precious-metals contracts but has never managed to challenge the LME’s dominance in other industrial metals. Capital cost estimates to restart the Dartbrook coal mine, in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, have decreased by A$160-million to A$180-million, owner Australian Pacific Coal said on Tuesday. Australian Pacific Coal is working with strategic partners M Resources and Tetra to fast-track an immediate 1.5-million-tonne-a-year operation, which will progress towards a nameplate capacity of six-million tonnes a year.

Diversified miner South32 has reported two fatalities at its Mozal aluminium smelter, in Mozambique, following an incident. A contractor was also seriously injured in the same incident, and is receiving treatment, the miner said.
