Manchester United fans react to David De Gea’s poor display vs Villarreal
Penalty shoot-outs are where heroes and villains are classified, and it was David De Gea’s turn to be a villain last night.
Manchester United players were left in tears as Villarreal won the Europa League final 11-10 on penalties.
It might be a cruel way to lose the final but the Red Devils only have themselves to blame.
In 120 minutes of football, they failed to create enough chances.
Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood all had a tough time breaking through Villarreal’s defence.
The Yellow Submarines offered little going forward. They had only one shot on target which gave them the lead in the first half.
For the rest of the game, David De Gea’s only job was to pass the ball to his teammates as the Spanish outfit decided to sit back and defend robustly.
Both talent and luck play a part in the penalty shoot-out, with all 20 outfield players putting the ball past the goalkeepers from the spot.
Geronimo Rulli and De Gea got their hands to two of the penalties but didn’t have enough power to prevent the ball from going into the net.
Rulli stepped up to take the 11th spot-kick for his team. Even with a short run-up, he managed to fire the ball past his opposite number.
The pressure was on United’s number one who looked really short of confidence after failing to stop a single penalty.
He tried to place the ball into the right corner but Villarreal’s goalkeeper read his movement and parried the ball away to write his name in the club’s history.
Some Red Devils’ supporters believe the club would have won the Europa League final if Solskjaer had put Dean Henderson between the sticks for the penalties.
Here is how fans reacted to De Gea’s disappointing outing:
The 30-year old keeper has been a great servant to the club. However, his performances have taken a significant dip in the last two years.
Solskjaer must decide who will be his favoured shot-stopper before the start of the new season.
Henderson has shown that he is a robust goalkeeper and can be relied upon.
De Gea may have to find another club after the Euros if Henderson is given the nod to be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
