Authorities say the shooter who opened fire at a Texas megachurch over the weekend had a history of mental illness and used an AR-style rifle in the attack that also critically injured their 7-year-old son. Police identified the shooter as 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno. They noted Monday that Moreno sometimes used both male and female aliases. Alaska state health officials say an elderly man has died from Alaskapox. It's the first known fatality from the recently discovered virus. A bulletin issued last week says the man died in late January. He lived in the forest in the remote Kenai Peninsula. Alaskapox, also known as AKPV, is related to smallpox. Symptoms can include a rash, swollen lymph nodes and joint or muscle pain. Alaska health officials say only seven cases have been confirmed since 2015. Authorities say one person was killed and five others wounded following a dispute between two groups of teenagers at a New York City subway station Monday at the start of the evening rush hour. Police say a small plane with two people aboard landed safely at Buffalo Niagara International Airport after its rear door fell off. Police in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga say there are no reports of injuries or property damage on the ground. The plane lost the door around 5:30 p.m. Monday as it flew over Cheektowaga, a few miles south of the airport. Police say officers searched for the door but did not immediately find it.

Public health officials in Oregon have reported a case of bubonic plague in a local resident. They said last week the person likely contracted it from a pet cat. Deschutes County health officials say all close contacts of the person and the cat have been contacted and provided medication. The county says the case has been identified and treated in its early stages. Officials say it poses little risk to the community.
