New York state lawyers and an attorney for former President Donald Trump have settled their differences over a $175 million bond that Trump posted to block the collection of a large civil fraud judgment while he pursues appeals. The agreement reached Monday cut short a potential day-long court hearing in Manhattan that was to feature witnesses. As part of a deal struck during a 20-minute recess, lawyers for Trump and Knight Specialty Insurance Company agreed to keep the money in a cash account that will gain interest but faces no downside risk.
Military scientists have identified the remains of an Army Air Forces pilot from Michigan who died during a World War II bombing mission in Southeast Asia. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said Monday the remains of 2nd Lt. John E. McLauchlen Jr. of Detroit were identified in January. McLauchlen was the 25-year-old pilot of a B-24J Liberator bomber during a December 1943 bombing mission. The mission targeted a railroad yard in Myanmar, then known as Burma. A $12 billion high-speed passenger rail line between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area has started construction. Express Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, as the fashion retailer looks to sell the majority of its stores. Columbus, Ohio-based Express, which is also the parent of Bonbons and Upwest brands, is shuttering a handful of its operations in the process. Supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons say will sell more of their stores in an effort to quell the federal government’s concerns about their proposed merger. The companies said Monday they would now sell 579 Kroger and Albertsons stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire-based grocery company, for $2.9 billion.
