Recent rains and cooler weather have helped firefighters gain ground on two wildfires in southern New Mexico that have killed two people, destroyed hundreds of homes and forced thousands to flee. Fallout from the South Fork and Salt fires continue to pose risks to firefighters and the public in the areas near the mountain village of Ruidoso. Democrats in California have agreed to delay a minimum wage increase for about 426,000 health care workers to help balance the budget. Health care workers were supposed to see a raise on July 1. Now their pay will increase on Oct. 15 if state revenues in the first three months of the fiscal year are 3% above expectations. If that doesn't happen, the increase would start in January. The delay is part of an agreement to close an estimated $46.8 billion budget deficit this year. Lawmakers will likely vote on the budget proposal next week.

The husband of a bride who was killed in a South Carolina beach road collision on her wedding night last year will receive almost a million dollars in a settlement connected to the crash. The Post and Courier reports that Aric Hutchinson will receive about $863,300 from Folly Beach bars The Drop In Bar & Deli, the Crab Shack and Snapper Jacks, as well as Progressive auto insurance and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The lawyer for one of Iran's popular hip-hop artists and a critic of the regime Toomaj Salehi says the country's Supreme Court has overturned his death sentence. The Israeli army says an Israeli man was shot dead in a Palestinian town in the northern West Bank while deadly strikes rocked northern Gaza. The army said the man fatally shot in the town of Qalqilya, and that Israeli troops were currently operating there. Authorities say three Alabama men are dead from likely drowning after becoming distressed while swimming at a Florida Panhandle beach. The Bay County Sheriff's Office says the young men had traveled to the Panama City Beach area Friday evening. The sheriff’s office received an emergency call about the distressed swimmers shortly after 8 p.m. The U.S. Coast Guard and others began rescue efforts. A water emergency has prompted the mayor of Capri — one of Italy’s most popular islands — to order a halt to the arrival of tourists, in a crisis that has deprived some areas of any water supply. Mayor Paolo Falco said Saturday that without a water supply, it is impossible to guarantee essential services to “thousands of people” who travel to the island daily during the tourist season. Three people are missing after massive thunderstorms and rainfall in southeastern Switzerland caused a landslide. One woman was pulled out alive after being buried by the landslide on Saturday morning in the Alpine valley of Misox in Graubünden. A rescue operation for the three others is ongoing. Elsewhere in Switzerland, the popular tourist destination of Zermatt in the southern canton of Valais near the iconic Matterhorn mountain remains inaccessible because of heavy rains and melting snow.
