California authorities say state Justice Department officials are investigating the death of a man who was shot by his parole officer. The state corrections department said Friday in a statement that 26-year-old Jeremy Sanchez was being visited by the agent at his home in Fresno on Christmas Eve when a “physical altercation” broke out between the two. A former coach at a Bay Area school was convicted of 60 counts of sexual abuse.

Authorities in Northern California say a man has been fatally shot during an encounter with a highway patrol officer. The shooting occurred in Plymouth, a small town east of Sacramento. Authorities did not say specifically whether the officer shot the man, only that it it was officer-involved. California Highway Patrol officials say the officer responded Thursday evening to a report of a vehicle blocking part of a road. When he arrived he saw a man pushing a pickup. A federal judge is signaling that Rudy Giuliani's contempt hearing next Friday might not end so well for the former New York City mayor and onetime personal lawyer for President-elect Donald Trump. Oklahoma's Republican attorney general is dismissing a felony assault charge against a police officer who slammed a 71-year-old man to the ground, breaking his neck. The use of force came during an argument over a traffic ticket in late October. Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced late Friday that he had intervened in the case and dismissed the charge against Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Joseph Gibson. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says her agency will need to start taking “extraordinary measures,” or special accounting maneuvers intended to prevent the nation from hitting the debt ceiling, as early as January 14th, in a letter sent to congressional leaders Friday afternoon. The department has taken such action in the past. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow.
