The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) today revealed US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) allegedly circumvented state laws and federal privacy guidelines when it purchased access to a commercial database for the purpose of conducting mass surveillance. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by the ACLU of Northern California indicate that more than 9,000 ICE agents currently have access to a license plate database containing information on as much as 60 percent of the US population. YouTube has, yet again, failed to protect children online. Recent investigations by Wired and video blogger Matt Watson have alleged that paedophiles were using the site’s comments section to leave predatory messages on videos containing and uploaded by children, and to share links to child sexual abuse material. In response to the investigations – and the threat of an advertiser boycott – YouTube has now said it will disable comments on videos containing young children. Yesterday, cryptocurrency wallet and services provider, Abra, announced that users can now purchase Ethereum through its Android and iOS apps. You’d be forgiven if you thought this was already the case, but it wasn’t. Let me explain. With the new update, users can now add and withdraw actual Ethereum cryptocurrency to and from their Abra wallet. In January, IBM published a research study dubbed ‘Diversity in Faces‘ to explore whether AI-based systems developed biases against people based on their appearance. The company used a dataset consisting of nearly a million pictures of people’s faces from photo-hosting site Flickr. However, it failed to notify those Flickr users that it was using their pictures to train an AI – and you could be one of them. Google has updated its Gboard keyboard app for Android with AI-powered dictation that works offline. The company says it’s effectively miniaturized a cloud-based neural network system for speech recognition into an 80MB mobile app update, and that it’ll allow for faster and more reliable dictation on the go. That’s big, because it means you don’t need your phone connecting to a server to deliver high-quality speech recognition results – and you also don’t need to have access to a high-speed Wi-Fi network to use the feature. TikTok – the app that lets you create 15-second dubbed videos – is on a rapid growth curve. The app crossed 1 billion downloads last month, according to a report by analytics firm SensorTower. Ever since Microsoft gave up on Windows Phone, the company has been focusing instead on tightening integration with the big two mobile platforms, Android in particular. Microsoft today announced it’s bringing the Halo Master Chief Collection to the PC — and not just to its own store. Instead, it’s throwing all five games in the collection, along with Halo: Reach, over to Steam. In other news, we’ve just received word that Hell is starting to look a little frosty today.
