As Orlando shooter Omar Mateen unleashed gunfire into the LGBT nightclub Pulse early Sunday, he declared his support for the Islamic State. That declaration, The New York Times reports, was all part of Mateen's adherence to the terrorist group's specific instructions for sympathizers to follow when carrying out attacks on its behalf:

On Monday, Hillary Clinton stressed the importance of unity and tolerance in the aftermath of the Sunday morning shooting at the Orlando nightclub Pulse, which left 49 victims dead. After one of the many mass shootings to plague America in recent years, my wife stopped listening to the radio and drastically cut down her news consumption. I don't remember which shooting was the final straw for her, which is a sad testament to how regular an occurrence such attacks have become.
