The Deir al-Zor military airport in eastern Syria, which the Syrian army recaptured this month from Islamic State, began functioning again on Monday for the first time in nearly a year, Syrian state media and a monitoring group said. The military base is seen as a valuable asset for the Syrian army as it presses its campaign against Islamic State in Deir al-Zor province. "Most people would say there's no chance whatsoever" of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, Trump said as he got set for one-on-one talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly meetings. Opposition Sees Brexit ‘Chaos' in UK Government Shifts, Feuds

The British government's attempt to appear strong and united over Brexit wobbled Monday as a top official was shifted from his post days before a new round of divorce negotiations with the European Union. Opposition lawmakers said the move reflected the Conservatives’ “chaotic” approach to handling the biggest challenge facing the country. Prime Minister Theresa May, meanwhile, faced calls to discipline fellow Conservative Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson for undermining her leadership by publishing his own manifesto for Brexit. Transportation Strike Over Taxes Shuts Down Much of Haiti

Much of Haiti has come to a halt because of a transportation strike over new taxes proposed by the government. Most Haitians do not have private cars and they get around on motorcycle taxis or the often elaborately painted vans and trucks known as `"tap taps." But none were available Monday. Most shops were closed, as were schools because students could not get to class. Government offices were technically open but most employees could not get to work.   Unions called the strike because of proposed new taxes on driver licenses... Читать дальше...

Opposition: Lesotho Has Slipped into 'Reign of Terror'

Hopes that the tiny nation of Lesotho might find political stability have been shattered by recent events, including the shooting death of the country's army chief and the arrest of a journalist who was critical of the government. Southern African heads of state met over the weekend to discuss a way forward. An election in June was Lesotho's third poll in five years, after two coalitions collapsed amid infighting and meddling from the army. The third time was supposed to be the charm, as new... France Opens Door to Strengthen Iran Nuclear Deal

France on Monday gave a staunch defense of the Iran nuclear deal, suggesting there could be talks to strengthen the pact for the post-2025 period but that allowing it to collapse could lead Iran's neighbors to seek atomic weapons.
