Alarmed by yet another jump in syphilis cases in newborns, U.S. health officials are calling for stepped-up prevention measures, including encouraging millions of women of childbearing age and their partners to get tested for the sexually transmitted disease. More than 3,700 babies were born with congenital syphilis in 2022 — 10 times more than a decade before and a 32% increase from 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. A senior U.N. refugee official Tuesday warned that "an unimaginable humanitarian crisis" was unfolding in Sudan, with millions of people being forcibly displaced from their homes by an increasingly vicious conflict. Mali's army said Tuesday it carried out airstrikes on what it called terrorist targets in the rebel stronghold of Kidal, where witnesses and separatists said civilians, including children, died in the attack. The number of villagers killed during an attack in western Cameroon has risen to 25, the government said Tuesday, blaming anglophone separatists. The pre-dawn assault on Monday occurred at Egbekaw village, in the southwest region, the scene of deadly clashes between rebels and government forces for seven years. Bangladesh's government announced a higher minimum wage for garment workers on Tuesday, raising it 56% to about $113 per month. The new wage comes after weeks of violent protests by workers demanding higher salaries, which left two workers dead and several more injured.  The wage increase, which was agreed upon by a panel of factory owners, union leaders and officials, has been criticized as too small, with inflation in Bangladesh running at about 9.5%, increasing the price of basic needs.  ... Sweden is poised to become Europe's first smoke-free country largely thanks to the popularity of snus, a kind of moist snuff which is placed under the upper lip.    But some are worried the tobacco industry is peddling a "fairytale" that is too good to be true.     Used by one in seven Swedes, snus has, according to the government, helped slash the number of smokers from 15% of the population in 2005 to 5.2% last year, a record low in Europe.   A country is considered smoke-free when less than 5% of its population are daily smokers.
