Hamas militants late Tuesday released more Israeli hostages on the fifth day of an extended six-day truce in the Israel-Hamas war, with the Jewish state expected to soon free more Palestinian prisoners. The Israeli military said 12 hostages who were held in Gaza, 10 Israelis and two foreign nationals, were driven to Israel. Pope Francis canceled his trip to Dubai for the U.N. climate conference on doctors' orders Tuesday even though he is recovering from the flu and lung inflammation, the Vatican said.  Francis was scheduled to leave Rome on Friday to address the COP28 meeting first thing Saturday morning. A group tracking antisemitism in Germany said Tuesday that it documented a drastic increase of antisemitic incidents in the country in the month after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.  The RIAS group said it recorded 994 incidents, which is an average of 29 incidents per day and an increase of 320% compared to the same time period in 2022. Vietnam is dredging and filling out the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, a move that appears to be aimed at countering China’s assertive behavior in the disputed waters, analysts said. Recent Vietnamese expansion work in the Spratly Islands, which began in 2021, was most noticeable at Barque Canada Reef, according to a report last week by the Washington-based Center for Strategic International Studies' Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI). The Chinese coast guard said its vessels warned off Japanese ships that "illegally intruded" into waters around disputed East China Sea islets on Tuesday.  The Chinese vessels "took necessary control measures," the coast guard added, without going into details. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will not be making a previously announced visit to Ankara on Tuesday, the Turkish presidency told AFP, without providing a reason. The visit had been announced earlier this month by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said the two leaders would focus on forging a joint response to the Israel-Hamas war. Iran has finalized arrangements for the delivery of Russian made Sukhoi SU-35 fighter jets and helicopters, Iran's deputy defense minister told Iran's Tasnim news agency Tuesday, as Tehran and Moscow forge closer military relations. Rescuers in India on Tuesday reached an area where 41 miners have been trapped for 17 days following the collapse of a road tunnel. The next stage of the rescue effort involves a plan to pull the miners out on wheeled stretchers through nearly 60 meters of pipe. The workers became trapped Nov. 12 when a landslide collapsed the tunnel they were working to construct in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. Former U.S. first lady Rosalynn Carter is set to be honored Tuesday at a tribute service in Atlanta. Her husband, 99-year-old former President Jimmy Carter, who entered hospice care in February, plans to attend Tuesday’s service.
