Haniyeh Chosen as Hamas' Political Chief

The Hamas Islamic militant movement that controls the Gaza Strip announced Saturday that it had chosen its former Gaza prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, as the group's new political chief. Haniyeh succeeds Hamas' longtime exiled leader, Khaled Mashaal, and the move comes shortly after Gaza's rulers unveiled a new, seemingly more pragmatic political program aimed at ending the group's international isolation. Hamas is trying to rebrand itself as an Islamic national liberation movement, rather than a branch of the pan-Arab Muslim Brotherhood... Читать дальше...

Iran TV Censors Rouhani Documentary Ahead of Elections

Iran's state TV Saturday censored a documentary released by President Hassan Rouhani's campaign, ahead of the upcoming presidential election. A report by the semiofficial ILNA did not elaborate, but a Rouhani campaign official confirmed to The Associated Press that state TV had cut parts of "President Rouhani." He said one censored segment showed supporters chanting for opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, who has been under house arrest since 2011 and whose Green Movement hard-liners oppose. Several hundred people rallied Saturday outside an office of Hungary's governing Fidesz party after a journalist said she had been assaulted at a party meeting by a government official. Julia Halasz, a reporter with the 444.hu news site, said a meeting organizer took away her cellphone and dragged her down several flights of steps and out of a school by the arm while she was covering a Fidesz public forum. Economy Minister Mihaly Varga and Defense Minister Istvan Simicsko spoke at Thursday's... Читать дальше...

Trump Transition Team Raised Flags About Flynn, Russia Contacts

In late November, a member of Donald Trump's transition team approached national security officials in the Obama White House with a curious request: Could the incoming team get a copy of the classified CIA profile on Sergey Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the United States? Marshall Billingslea, a former Pentagon and NATO official, wanted the information for his boss, Michael Flynn, who had been tapped by Trump to serve as White House national security adviser. Billingslea knew Flynn would be speaking to Kislyak... Читать дальше...

Women March Saturday in Ongoing Protests Against Venezuela's Maduro

Hundreds of women dressed in all white marched in Venezuela's capital Saturday, continuing more than a month of demonstrations against President Nicolas Maduro. Saturday's rally, led by opposition leaders and lawmakers, marched to the Interior Ministry to denounce "repression" over the past month as demonstrators have been hit with tear gas by security forces. Pakistan’s Emerging Threat: Highly Educated Youth Gravitate to Radicalization

The on-campus mob slaying of a journalism student and the arrest of a female medical student for allegedly planning a suicide attack underscore concerns that some of Pakistan’s highly educated youth are gravitating toward violent extremism and radicalization. Security experts say the unrelated incidents show that religious militancy isn’t limited to the disenfranchised and uneducated poor. They contend the government has to wake up to a problem that may be getting worse as the country’s conservative streak growing deeper. Читать дальше...

Last Hindenburg Survivor, 88, Recalls: 'The Air Was on Fire'

Thunderstorms and wind had delayed the Hindenburg's arrival in New Jersey from Germany on May 6, 1937. The father of 8-year-old Werner Doehner headed to his cabin after using his movie camera to shoot some scenes of Lakehurst Naval Air Station from the airship's dining room. "We didn't see him again," recalled Doehner, now 88 and the only person left of the 62 passengers and crew who survived the fire that killed his father, sister and 34 other souls 80 years ago Saturday. Sunday also could mark the start of a new path for France and its relationship with the rest of Europe, regardless of who wins.   Surveys at the official end of campaigning had centrist Emmanuel Macron in a strong lead, with 62 percent support, and nationalist anti-immigration candidate Marine Le Pen at 38 percent. White House Proposes Deep Cuts to Drug Control Office

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is proposing to dramatically slash funding for the White House drug control office, after Trump campaigned to fix the nation's growing opioid abuse crisis. A preliminary 2018 budget document from the Office of Management and Budget would reduce funding for the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) by 95 percent, from $364 million to just $24 million. The proposal calls for eliminating ONDCP's drug-free communities and high-intensity drug trafficking programs... Читать дальше...

Rain Could Play Major Role in Already Unpredictable Kentucky Derby

The U.S. Kentucky Derby, the first of three major yearly horse races in the United States, will take place on Saturday with rain in the forecast, adding another variable to an already unpredictable race. The 20-horse field lacks a clear dominant horse following winter preparatory races, and the 40 percent chance of rain predicted for Saturday could create a sloppy track ripe for an underdog victory. The last four Derby races have all been won by the favorite. However, without a dominant runner in the race... Читать дальше...

For the first time in recent history, French voters on Sunday will cast ballots in a presidential election with no candidates from traditional establishment parties. VOA Europe Correspondent Luis Ramirez reports from Paris.

US TV Outlets Refuse to Air Trump Ad

Several national U.S. television news outlets - ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN - have refused to air advertisements from President Donald Trump touting the accomplishments of his first 100 days in office. The paid ads feature nationally recognized television anchors with a "fake news" graphic superimposed on their faces. Sporadic Violations Reported in Syria’s ‘De-escalation Zones’
