Canada's Detention of Mexicans Surges After Visa Lift

Detention of Mexican citizens in Canada has spiked since December, when the government lifted its visa requirement for visitors from Mexico, figures obtained by Reuters show, even as Canada burnishes its image as more welcoming than the United States. Detentions in the first five months of 2017 were more than twice the previous two years combined, according to Canada Border Services Agency statistics provided last week in response to a Reuters request. Canada's detention of Mexicans surged more... Читать дальше...

Ankara Backs Qatar in Saudi-led Showdown

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has placed himself at the forefront of the defense of Qatar, in the face of Saudi Arabia-led economic and diplomatic sanctions. “A very grave mistake is being made in Qatar; isolating a nation in all areas is inhumane and against Islamic values,” Erdogan said in his weekly Tuesday address to his parliamentary deputies. “It's as if a death-penalty decision has been taken for Qatar,” said Erdogan. Erdogan is backing his increasingly tough rhetoric with action. Читать дальше...

Sessions: Nothing Improper About 2016 Meetings With Russian Ambassador

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday he did nothing improper in meeting twice last year with Russia's ambassador to Washington, and that any suggestion he colluded with Moscow officials in last year's presidential election campaign is an "appalling and detestable lie." Sessions, in opening remarks before the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Russian interference in the election to help President Donald Trump win, said he decided to remove himself from oversight of the criminal... R2-D2, Lightsaber: Force Strong in Star Wars Auction

Die-hard Star Wars fans will need to rely on more than the force if they want to bid on an R2-D2 droid that appeared in several of the franchise's movies. A couple million dollars might also help. Luke Skywalker's lightsaber, Darth Vader's helmet and shoulder armor, as well as imperial and rebel weapons are on the block, but the centerpiece is no doubt the squat blue, white and silver droid famous for communicating in a series of electronic beeps and squeaks. Representing "the pinnacle of the... Читать дальше...

Two former Serbian secret policemen went on trial for a second time on Tuesday over their alleged role in the ethnic cleansing of thousands of non-Serbs during the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s. The initial four-year trial of Jovica Stanisic, the former head of Serbia's State Security Service (DB) and Franko Simatovic, his alleged right-hand man, resulted in an acquittal in 2013, but an appeals judge ordered a retrial. The trial is seen as the last remaining case that could establish a judicial... Читать дальше...

Jordan and Saudi Arabia have closed Al Jazeera's local offices, while the channel and its... Читать дальше...

The BP Statistical Review of World Energy shows global coal production fell by more than 6 percent last year. That's the largest decline in the history of BP's survey, which the British energy company has issued annually for more than six decades. Читать дальше...

Experts: Fake News, Propaganda, Disinformation Has Always Existed

Fake news, propaganda and disinformation has always existed. What sets today apart from years gone by is its rapid dissemination and global reach, experts say.  Concerns raised by the instant propagation of fake news in the digital age and the harmful impact it has on the credibility and independence of journalism, democratic values and human rights were examined by a panel of experts Tuesday at a side event of the United Nations Human Rights Council. US Central Bank Mulls Higher Interest Rate

Top officials of the U.S. central bank are gathered in Washington, debating whether to raise short-term interest rates on Wednesday, and by how much.  Most economists expect the Federal Reserve to boost the benchmark rate a modest quarter of a percent, to a range between one and 1.25 percent.  The Fed cut rates nearly to zero at the worst of the financial crisis to make borrowing cheaper in a bid to boost economic growth and employment. Since then, the recovering economy and improved unemployment rate... Читать дальше...

European Cities Try to Keep Public Spaces Open While Adding Security

Summertime in Europe often means that large-scale outdoor events are planned for weeks in a row, with lots of people in public spaces. Vans and cars have also been used to carry out attacks in Germany, Sweden and Britain.
