Iran’s missile strike this week against Islamic State targets in Syria is escalating its military involvement in Syria and likely will heighten tensions between the U.S.-led coalition and Russian and Iranian forces aligned with the Syrian regime, analysts say. Islamic State militants blew up on Wednesday the Grand al-Nuri Mosque of Mosul and its famous leaning minaret, an Iraqi military statement said. One of the biggest icebergs on record is like a "niggling tooth" about to snap off Antarctica and will be an extra hazard for ships around the frozen continent as it breaks up, scientists said on Wednesday. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says Saudi Arabia and its allies have prepared a list of demands for Qatar, and he emphasized the United States looks forward to the diplomatic dispute between the Gulf states "moving toward a resolution." Murders Spike in Mexico, with May Deadliest Month in Decades

May was Mexico's bloodiest month in at least 20 years and homicides are up sharply in 2017 compared with last year, according to newly released government crime statistics. Statistics published Tuesday by the Interior Department said that 2,186 people were murdered last month. FBI: Gunman Who Attacked Republican Lawmakers Acted Alone

The gunman who shot and wounded Congressman Steve Scalise in an attack on Republican lawmakers last week acted alone and did not post any online threats to members of Congress, FBI officials said Wednesday. Passengers Evacuated After Police Officer Stabbed at Michigan Airport

An airport in the Midwestern state of Michigan was evacuated Wednesday after a police officer was stabbed in the neck, authorities said. Michigan State Police said the officer was in critical condition after being stabbed as he patrolled in the main terminal of Bishop International Airport, a small regional airport in Flint, Michigan. Germany Files Espionage Charges Against Alleged Turkish Spy

German prosecutors have filed espionage charges against a man accused of spying for Turkish intelligence on a Kurdish politician and activists.   Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that the indictment against 32-year-old Mehmet Fatih S., whose full name wasn't given in line with privacy laws, was filed in a Hamburg court.   The Turkish national was arrested in December. Russia Cancels Talks With US After New Sanctions

Russian officials reacted to new sanctions unveiled by the U.S. by canceling upcoming talks between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon. Ryabkov said that “the situation is not conducive to holding a round of this dialogue.” The U.S. State Department expressed regret at the cancellation of Friday's talks. Deaths, Injuries Mount as Ukraine Conflict Enters 4th Year: OHCHR

With the conflict in Ukraine now in its fourth year casualties have mounted substantially in recent months, according to a new report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
