United Nations experts who attended an emergency session on Sudan at the U.N. Human Rights Council Thursday were thwarted in their appeal for independent investigations into atrocities allegedly committed against Sudanese civilians by two rival armed forces. By a vote of 18 in favor, 14 against, and 15 abstentions, the 47-member Council adopted a resolution that condemns the human rights violations committed after the October 25, 2021, military coup in Sudan and the conflict that erupted this year on April 15. The World Health Organization on Thursday declared mpox — formerly known as monkeypox — no longer poses a global public health emergency. Canada's Ontario Provincial Police say one police officer is dead and two others were injured after they were shot early Thursday when responding to a report of disturbance at a residence in rural eastern Ontario. From his Twitter account, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Commissioner Thomas Carrique identified the deceased officer as Sergeant Eric Mueller. “We anxiously await further word on his fellow officers who are still at hospital. Police in Finland said at least 24 people — most of them school children — were injured when a temporary footbridge collapsed Thursday in suburban Helsinki. In a statement, police in the city of Espoo, just west of the capital, Helsinki, said the bridge collapsed at about 9:30 a.m. local time in the city’s Tapiola district. China sentenced lawyer and prominent rights activist Guo Feixiong to a prison term of eight years on Thursday, with diplomats from several countries saying they were barred from the trial in the southern city of Guangzhou. Indonesian President Joko Widodo Thursday acknowledged that no progress has been made to end the deadly violence in Myanmar.
