Israel and the Islamic Jihad militant group in the Gaza Strip agreed to an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire late Saturday, ending five days of intense fighting that left 33 Palestinians, including at least 13 civilians dead. The family of a Frenchman released this week after he had been jailed by Iran said on Saturday he was "relieved" to be back in France. On Friday, Benjamin Briere, whose ordeal in Iran lasted three years, and French-Irish citizen Bernard Phelan, held since October, were freed from their prison in the northeastern city of Mashhad, the French foreign ministry said. Israel and Palestinian militants unleashed salvos of fire for a fifth day on Saturday, with the Islamic Jihad militant group launching dozens more rockets and the Israeli military pounding targets inside the Gaza Strip. A Chinese court Thursday sentenced Yang Maodong, a veteran pro-democracy activist, to eight years in prison on subversion charges for his two-decade advocacy of rights and freedoms.
