Canadian Province Braces for More Wildfires

Canada's main oil-producing province of Alberta faces another hot, dry weekend, with warnings of more intense wildfires after blazes forced thousands to evacuate homes and temporarily shuttered energy production. Authorities in at least one fire-ravaged area said Saturday they have seen an increase in fire activity and were expecting more. Residents forced to evacuate early this month say they are frustrated with the indefinite displacement. Special alerts have been declared across western Canada... Читать дальше...

Two people in Israel were killed by rocket fire.  The Egyptian-brokered cease-fire took effect just after 10 p.m., with a last-minute burst of rocket fire and Israeli airstrikes stretching several minutes past the deadline announced by Egypt.  While the calm brought a sense of... Are International Students a Benefit or a Loss for Source Countries?

India recently became the world’s most populous country, and 25% of the world’s population under the age of 25 live there. Unsurprisingly, it’s one of the biggest sources of international students in the Western world. But India’s government questions the value of this “one-way traffic,” arguing that the country loses valuable talent and should be attracting international students of its own. One member of India’s Economic Advisory Council said there are “too many university campuses on the planet,”... Читать дальше...

In Pakistan Clashes, Khan Shows Command of Huge Crowds. What's Driving Them?

The arrest of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan earlier this week has shown how quickly his fervent loyalists can mobilize in large numbers.  Within hours of his detention, his supporters torched vehicles and buildings, and attacked police and military facilities to express their fury over the treatment of the 70-year-old opposition leader.
