Biden Picks Cancer Surgeon Monica Bertagnolli to Head NIH

The Biden administration on Monday said it intends to nominate cancer surgeon Dr. Monica Bertagnolli to lead the National Institutes of Health (NIH) following a 16-month search for a permanent successor to the agency's long-serving director, Dr. Francis Collins, who stepped down in December 2021.  If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Bertagnolli will become the second woman to lead the NIH, the largest biomedical research agency in the world with a budget of $45 billion in 2022. NIH falls under the... Читать дальше...

Nigeria Police Investigate 15 Killings Amid Farmer-Herder Violence

Police in central Nigeria are investigating the killing last week of at least 15 people in a farming community that was attacked by gunmen. Police in central Nasarawa state say the killings appear to be in retaliation for the death of an ethnic Fulani herder who was attacked with a machete. Tensions between the farmer and herder communities over land use often explode into violence. Nasarawa state police spokesman Ramhan Nansel said authorities have deployed joint security forces including police... Читать дальше...

A one-year-old boy is dead and more than 20 people are missing in southern Malawi after a canoe carrying 37 people flipped when it was hit by a charging hippopotamus. Ethiopian Journalist Melkamsew Puts Women at Show's Heart

Ethiopian journalist Melkamsew Solomon broadcasts a weekly radio program, Yimechish, which focuses on rural women in Ethiopia. But for some listeners, Yimechish — an Amharic slang term which roughly translates to "You go, girl" — is too niche and too narrowly focused. "We get told, 'You keep talking about women all the time, what about men's issues? Is it only women who have problems in this country?' They say that we have a lot of other societal problems. Some people say it's luxury to talk about this," Melkamsew said. Читать дальше...

Kenyan Government Acknowledges Failure in Not Preventing Cult Deaths

Kenyan President William Ruto has said his government takes responsibility for the deaths of more than 200 members of a Christian cult who starved themselves.  Kenyan investigators have accused preacher Paul Mackenzie of instructing his followers not to eat so they could meet Jesus. Ruto on Sunday said officials in Kenya's coastal county of Kilifi must explain how so many people died without their knowledge. The Kenyan government admits state officers in Kilifi County failed to protect the followers... Читать дальше...

'Goosebumps': Thais Barely Believe Scale of Reform Party Win

“I am Pita Limjaroenrat, the next prime minister of Thailand,” the Move Forward Party leader boomed from a campaign truck wedged tight between supporters carrying orange flags, camera phones and a sense of disbelief that the country could be set to exit army control after nearly a decade. The Harvard-educated 42-year-old said Sunday’s election has given his party the mandate to lead a coalition government, a position backed up by second-placed pro-democracy party Pheu Thai. Unofficial results... Читать дальше...

Pro-Democracy Party's Election Win 'Turning Point' for Thailand

The surprise win of Thailand's Move Forward Party in national elections Sunday and its radical pro-democracy agenda marks a watershed moment in the country's politics and a strong rebuke of nine years of military or military-backed rule, analysts say.  But parliamentary rules drafted by the military after a 2014 coup that favor pro-military candidates, they add, could still leave the party with the most popular votes out of the next government.  In the coming days, weeks or even months of horse... Apparent Cyberattack Disrupts Philadelphia Inquirer Operations Ahead of Mayoral Primary

The Philadelphia Inquirer is experiencing the largest disruption to its operations in 27 years due to what the daily newspaper called a cyberattack that was first detected Saturday morning. The attack has prompted Pennsylvania’s largest news organization to close its office through at least Tuesday, meaning Inquirer reporters will be unable to use their newsroom on Tuesday night to cover the city’s Democratic primary for the city’s 100th mayoral election. This incident has caused the greatest... Читать дальше...

Pakistan's Ruling Coalition Stages Rare Anti-Supreme Court Rally

Thousands of supporters of Pakistan's coalition government Monday gathered outside the country's Supreme Court demanding the chief justice resign for releasing former prime minister and leading opposition politician Imran Khan. Buses and vans transported people from around the country to the capital, Islamabad, where they made their way into a high-security zone, housing the top court and other key government buildings. Rally leaders said they would stage a sit-in protest until their demands were met. Читать дальше...

‘Waste of Time’: Community College Transfers Derail Students

First came the good news. After taking classes at a community college, Ricki Korba was admitted to California State University, Bakersfield, as a transfer student. But when she logged on to her student account, she got a gut punch: Most of her previous classes wouldn’t count. The university rejected most of her science classes, she was told, because they were deemed less rigorous than those at Bakersfield — even though some used the same textbooks. Several other courses were rejected because Korba... Читать дальше...

Victory by Move Forward in Thailand Could Move ASEAN

A victory by liberal, youth leaning political parties in Sunday’s Thai national elections could have wider ramifications for Southeast Asia on issues ranging from human rights to the crisis in Myanmar. However, analysts stressed a potential alliance between Move Forward – with its leader Pita Limjaroenrat as prime minister – and the Pheu Thai Party still had to overcome a military-backed senate, which was instituted after the 2014 coup put Thai General Prayut Chan-o-cha in power. According to election results... Читать дальше...

China's Rising Clout Spotlighted at Finance Chief Meetings Before G7 Summit

The weekend gathering of finance chiefs from the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies did not single out China as a threat in their communique, but left signs the world's second-largest economy will loom large at this week's summit in Hiroshima.  Efforts to grapple with China's growing global presence were evident at the three-day G7 finance chiefs' gathering in Niigata, Japan, during which they held their first outreach in 14 years, aimed at winning over emerging nations.  The meeting with Brazil... Discovery of Europe's Biggest Cocaine Factory in Spain Marks New Trend

The packets of cocaine were marked with the Superman shield, but this was no accident. In an effort to make the illicit merchandise look like it had been gift wrapped before being sent from Colombia, the gang wanted to hide the fact it was produced closer to home. The drug with apparent superpowers was made in a factory hidden in an isolated cottage in Galicia, northwestern Spain. A gang of eight "cooks" worked around the clock, seven days per week, in almost total isolation to produce 150 kilograms of the drug. Читать дальше...

Turkish Election Appears to be Headed for Runoff

With first-round vote tallies appearing to show Turkey heading to a runoff presidential election, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed confidence Monday he will prevail while top rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu said he will “absolutely win the second round.”  Erdogan, who has been in power for 20 years and is the country’s longest-serving leader, performed better than had been expected, but fell short of the 50% threshold needed to win in Sunday’s vote.    With more than 99.4% of ballot boxes counted... Child Social Media Stars Have Few Protections; Illinois Aims to Fix That

Holed up at home during the pandemic lockdown three years ago, 13-year-old Shreya Nallamothu was scrolling through social media when she noticed a pattern: Children even younger than her were the stars — dancing, cracking one-liners and being generally adorable.  "It seemed innocuous to me at first," Nallamothu said.  But as she watched more and more posts of kids pushing products or their mishaps going viral, she started to wonder: Who is looking out for them?  "I realized that there's a lot...
