Former U.N. diplomat Giandomenico Picco has died at the age of 75. Picco, whose negotiating skills helped resolve some of the thorniest crises of the 1980s and 1990s, died on Sunday after a long illness, his son, Giacomo Picco, said. Police in northern England say they have removed 34 bodies from a funeral home and arrested a man and woman on suspicion of fraud and preventing lawful burials. A record-setting rain storm has flooded parts of Charleston, South Carolina, requiring emergency responders to help some people get out of high waters. The National Weather Service in Charleston reported that 3.63 inches of rain doused downtown Charleston on Saturday, shattering the one-day record of 1.43 inches from 1948. Nine people have been jailed and will be tried Monday over accusations of harassing and threatening two 21-year-old transgender persons in the northern city of Thessaloniki. The nine were remanded after appearing before a prosecutor Sunday. Twelve other people, all minors, were released provisionally pending trial on the same charges before a juvenile court. As Universal Pictures prepared for a big night at the Academy Awards with “Oppenheimer,” the studio also celebrated the No. 1 debut of “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which collected $58.3 million in domestic theaters over the weekend. Authorities were working to assist a beached sperm whale that is stranded on a sandbar off Florida’s Gulf Coast. The Venice Police Department said in a Facebook post Sunday morning that the whale is about 70 feet long and is still alive. It beached on a sandbar that is about 50 yards from Service Club Park. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and staff from Mote Marine Laboratory were also assisting. Police said they haven’t determined what type of whale it is. Venice is about 75 miles south of Tampa.

A Missouri man has been charged with shooting and killing his mother as she tried to enter the back door of their home. Jaylen Johnson’s attorney, William Goldstein, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Johnson believed his mother was an intruder when she tried to enter the home in the St. Louis suburb of Olivette around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Olivette police said 56-year-old Monica McNichols-Johnson died at the house. Goldstein said Johnson immediately called 911 after he shot his mother, and he has been distraught ever since.
