US Asks for Emergency Security Council Meeting on North Korea

The U.N. Security Council could hold an emergency closed-door meeting Wednesday on the latest North Korean missile launch. The United States asked for the emergency talks. U.S. military analysts suspect the North test fired an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching Alaska. The U.N. has imposed sanction after sanction on Pyongyang, which have apparently done little to convince the North to give up its nuclear ambitions. The latest test launch has also frustrated North Korea's biggest ally... Читать дальше...

Man Wins Lawsuit in China Over Forced Gay Conversion Therapy

A gay man in central China has successfully sued a mental hospital over forced conversion therapy, in what activists are hailing as the first such victory in a country where the LGBT rights movement is gradually emerging from the fringes. A court in Zhumadian in Henan province ordered a city mental hospital to publish a public apology in local newspapers and pay the 38-year-old man 5,000 yuan ($735) in compensation, according to a copy of the June 26 judgment seen by The Associated Press. The man... Читать дальше...

State Media: Saudi Soldier Killed, 3 Wounded in Explosion

A Saudi soldier was killed and three were wounded when suspected militants attacked their convoy in eastern Saudi Arabia, the interior ministry said on Tuesday, the latest in a series of attacks in the troubled region. The town of al-Awamiya, located in the oil-producing al-Qatif province, is a flashpoint between the Sunni Muslim government and minority Shi'ites complaining of discrimination. The soldier was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade in the old part of the town known as al-Musawara and an investigation was underway... Читать дальше...

The head of Ukraine's Cyber Police, Serhiy Demedyuk, told Reuters the servers of M.E.Doc - Ukraine's most popular accounting software - had been seized as part of an investigation into the attack. Ex-Mexican Governor Accepts Extradition from Guatemala

A former Mexican governor captured in Guatemala has agreed to his extradition for a second time in two weeks, but it was not immediately clear how soon that could happen.   Javier Duarte was captured in April, six months after resigning as governor of Veracruz.   The two hearings covered distinct charges he faces in Mexico, including allegations of embezzlement and ties to organized crime.   Duarte said Tuesday he did not commit those crimes and would return to Mexico to clear his name.   Duarte's lawyer... New EU Court Blow to Uber over French taxi case

Uber suffered a new setback in Europe on Tuesday when a European Union court adviser said France was entitled to charge local managers of the U.S. ride-hailing app firm with running an illegal taxi service. Uber played down the non-binding opinion from an advocate general at the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ), saying it applied only to a service using unlicensed drivers known as UberPOP, which it had already discontinued in France. Judges will make a final ruling later this year. Читать дальше...

Panda Diplomacy: Merkel, Xi Pushed Into Awkward Embrace Before G20

When President Xi Jinping took the stage in Davos in January and painted China as a champion of free markets ready to fill the global leadership role vacated by the United States, German officials couldn't help but chuckle. Their expectation was that Donald Trump, due to be inaugurated as U.S. president days later, would quickly temper his protectionist campaign rhetoric and patch up ties with Western allies, leaving little space for Beijing. Six months later, as Xi arrives in Berlin for a highly... Читать дальше...

Canada to Apologize, Pay Former Gitmo Prisoner Omar Khadr

The Canadian government is going to apologize and give millions of dollars to a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner who pleaded guilty to killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan when he was 15, with Canada's Supreme Court later ruling that officials had interrogated him under "oppressive circumstances." An official familiar with the deal said Tuesday that Omar Khadr will receive 10.5 million Canadian dollars (US$8 million). The official was not authorized to discuss the deal publicly before the announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity. Читать дальше...

US Defends Travel Ban Restrictions

The United States is defending its travel ban on six majority-Muslim countries, including restrictions that block grandparents and "extended" relatives of people already in the U.S. from joining them. The U.S. said in a court filing late Monday that the limitations it imposed on travel from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen were reasonable, based on long-set principles in U.S. immigration law. The government was responding to a lawsuit brought by the Pacific island state of Hawaii... Читать дальше...

Malawi Faces Resistance to New Bus Safety Measures

Authorities in Malawi have faced resistance from bus operators as they try to implement enhanced traffic safety measures amid a rise in fatal accidents this year. Two police stations were torched on June 23 in Malawi’s commercial capital, Blantyre, as minibus drivers and conductors protested the new traffic safety measures. Police used tear gas to disperse demonstrations. Officials say the new measures are a response to a rise in deadly road accidents, many of them involving buses. The most recent... Читать дальше...

Venezuela's supreme court has pushed aside the opposition-controlled congress with its own appointment of a deputy chief prosecutor: a government loyalist who was sanctioned by the U.S. for her role pursuing President Nicolas Maduro's opponents.   Tuesday's decision to name Katherine Harrington to the post is another step undermining chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz.   The high court is holding a hearing Tuesday on whether to strip Ortega Diaz of immunity from prosecution for unspecified irregularities. No 'Specific Agenda,' But Trump, Putin Have Lots to Discuss

President Donald Trump's first face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday will be brimming with global intrigue, but the White House says there's "no specific agenda." So in the absence of a set list of topics, what are two of the world's most famously unpredictable leaders to discuss? Trump, who prefers to have neatly packaged achievements to pair with high-profile meetings, may be looking for some concessions from Russia to show he's delivering progress and helping restore... Media Groups Criticize Arrest of 3 Journalists in Myanmar

When three journalists were arrested last week after reporting in territory held by an outlawed rebel group in northeastern Myanmar, government officials were quick to blame the journalists. Turkish Minister: Troops Won't Leave Cyprus Under Peace Deal

Turkey's foreign minister says Turkish soldiers will remain on Cyprus under any agreement to reunify the ethnically divided island.   Mevlut Cavusoglu says Turkey won't accept a peace accord that would mandate the withdrawal of all of its troops from Cyprus — a key demand by Greece and internationally recognized Greek Cypriots.   He told reporters after a morning round of talks at a Swiss resort Tuesday that anyone "dreaming" of removing all Turkish troops from the island has "to wake up." ...
