Bahraini Rights Activist Nabeel Rajab Sentenced to Two Years in Jail

A Bahrain court sentenced rights campaigner Nabeel Rajab to two years in jail on Monday, supporters said, for allegedly making "false or malicious" statements about Bahraini authorities. Authorities at Bahrain's information affairs office could not immediately be reached for comment. Bahrain has repeatedly denied systematic rights abuses. The Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) said Rajab had been unable to attend the trial, having been at an interior ministry hospital since his health deteriorated in April. Senegal's Former President Returns for Legislative Elections

Hundreds of people filled the streets of Dakar outside the airport Monday to welcome former Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade, who has returned to lead his party into legislative elections after spending years abroad following a failed bid for a third term in office. The 91-year-old flew into Dakar Monday from Paris, accompanied by his wife Viviane. US Deploys Advanced Anti-aircraft Missiles in Baltics For First Time

The United States deployed a battery of Patriot long-range anti-aircraft missiles in Lithuania to be used in NATO war games Tuesday — the first time the advanced defense system has been brought to the Baltics where Russia has air superiority. The Patriot battery was brought to the Siauliai military airbase Monday, ahead of the Tobruk Legacy exercise, and will be withdrawn when the exercise ends July 22, a Lithuanian defense ministry spokeswoman told Reuters. Mexico's Roman Catholic Church said in an editorial that Mexicans can't feel safe anywhere, as homicides rise throughout the country. Israel's Labor Party has elected political newcomer Avi Gabbay as its new leader, with hopes to revive its fortunes after 16 years in the opposition. Gabbay, 50, defeated Amir Peretz, a former party leader and defense minister, by a small margin in a runoff vote Monday. Gabbay served a brief stint as environment minister under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but later resigned. A former telecom executive, Gabbay stresses his humble beginnings. Hindu Pilgrims Shot, Killed in Kashmir

At least six Hindu pilgrims were fatally shot by suspected militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Monday. The victims were among nearly 50 people traveling on an annual pilgrimage when their vehicle was attacked by what local police suspect were separatists fighting against Indian rule in Kashmir. The U.N.-backed Cambodian tribunal trying Khmer Rouge leaders for atrocities committed while they ruled the country acknowledged Monday that only a handful of former high-ranking officials will face justice for their crimes. Food Crises Getting Worse in Somalia, Kenya

Severe food crises are growing in Kenya and Somalia, as the Horn of Africa continues to receive below-normal rainfall, according to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network. The hunger-tracking group says 2.9 million people in Kenya and 3.2 million in Somalia are experiencing Phase 3 or higher on the network's five-tier warning scale, with Phase 3 being the crisis stage and Phase 5 being a full-fledged famine. A panel appointed by Pakistan's Supreme Court to look into the financial wealth and overseas assets of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his children has recommended that a corruption case be brought against the family. Police Kill 6 Suspected IS Members in Southern Egypt

Egyptian police say they have killed six suspected members of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in a shootout. Security forces were carrying out a raid Monday on the militants' apartment hideout when the gunfight broke out.  All six suspected militants were killed. A cholera outbreak in Yemen "continues to spiral out of control," according to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which says there are now over 300,000 suspected cases of the water-borne disease.
