US to Test THAAD Missile Defenses as North Korea Tensions Mount

The United States plans to carry out a new test of its THAAD missile defense system against an intermediate-range ballistic missile in the coming days, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Friday, as tensions with North Korea climb. Despite being planned months ago, the U.S. missile defense test will gain significance in the wake of North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on July 4 that has heightened concerns about the threat from Pyongyang. The test will be the first... Читать дальше...

Trump Confronts Putin on Russia's Meddling in US Election

U.S. President Donald Trump "pressed" Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Moscow's meddling in last year's U.S. presidential election at their first face-to-face meeting Friday, according to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Tillerson said Putin denied Russian involvement in the election, although the two leaders had a "very robust and lengthy exchange on the subject." "The president pressed President Putin on more than one occasion regarding Russian involvement," Tillerson told reporters... Читать дальше...

Police in Thailand Say Ivory Trade Crackdown Is Successful

Efforts by Thailand's government to curb sales of ivory have been successful, following criticism of widespread trafficking in the country, police said Friday. Police announced that since January, officials have seized two elephant tusks and 422 tusk fragments in a single case, while in all of last year they seized 99 tusks and 22 tusk fragments in multiple cases.   Deputy Police Commissioner Gen. Chalermkiat Sriworakhan said the drop in the number of cases showed that strict enforcement had deterred traffickers. Читать дальше...

Venezuela's Maduro Orders State Workers to Vote for Assembly

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has said all state workers must take part in a vote on July 30 for candidates to his controversial new superbody assembly, seeking to avoid an embarrassingly low turnout in a country seething with discontent. Maduro has called for the Constituent Assembly, with powers to reform the constitution and supersede other institutions, in what he has said is an attempt to bring peace after three months of anti-government protests in which at least 90 people have died. Few Good Options Exist on N. Korea if Pressure Fails, Tillerson Says

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday that there would not be many good options left for dealing with North Korea if the peaceful pressure campaign the United States has been pushing to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs failed. "We have not given up hope," Tillerson told reporters after U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of a summit of the Group of 20 developed nations, just days after North Korea conducted what it said... US Missile Strike on North Korea an Unlikely Option, for Now

A pre-emptive military strike may be among the “pretty severe things” President Donald Trump says he is considering for North Korea, but it's a step so fraught with risk that it ranks as among the unlikeliest options. Even a so-called surgical strike aimed at the North's partially hidden nuclear and missile force is unlikely to destroy the arsenal or stop its leader, Kim Jong Un, from swiftly retaliating with long-range artillery that could kill stunning numbers in South Korea within minutes. An all-out conflict could then ensue. Читать дальше...

Detroit Judge Extends Stay on Iraqi Deportations

A federal judge has extended a stay of deportation for Iraqi nationals, blocking their removal for another two weeks. U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith in Detroit on Thursday halted deportations nationwide until July 24, saying he needs more time to decide whether he has jurisdiction in the case. The judge had issued an injunction against Iraqi deportations on June 22; that stay was set to expire Monday. In his opinion, Goldsmith wrote that he found "good cause" to extend the stay. "In light... Читать дальше...

A South Carolina prison inmate has been captured -- for a second time -- after an elaborate jail break. Authorities say Jimmy Causey may have utilized wire cutters dropped from a drone as well as smuggled cellphones, guns and nearly $50,000 in his latest escape, which went unnoticed for 18 hours and lasted two days before his capture Friday. Over that time, he was able to make it all the way to Austin, Texas, nearly 2,000 kilometers away from the Lieber Correctional Institution, about 145 kilometers southeast of Columbia. Amnesty: Rwanda Polls Marred by Chilling 'Climate of Fear'

Rwanda's presidential election next month will be held under "a climate of fear'' following two decades of often deadly attacks on political opponents, journalists and rights activists, Amnesty International charged Friday, calling for serious political reforms in the East African country. "Since the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front took power 23 years ago, Rwandans have faced huge, and often deadly, obstacles to participating in public life and voicing criticism of government policy,'' said Muthoni Wanyeki, an Amnesty official in East Africa.

Modern slavery cases surged in the first half of this year to about 820 by the end of June, compared to about 1,013 in the whole of 2016, Detective Inspector Phil Brewer told Reuters. The growth in cases is partly due to increased awareness about slavery, and as police and local authorities are now... Читать дальше...
