State Department: Russia Violating International Law by Denying WSJ Reporter Consular Access

Russia has not granted U.S. consular officials access to Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich since he was detained late last month and is in violation of international law, State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said on Monday. Patel told reporters at a regular press briefing that Moscow had over the weekend formally notified Washington of the detention, but the United States is still seeking consular access to Gershkovich, who has been detained since March 29 on espionage charges. Bomb Blast in Southwestern Pakistan Kills 4, Injures 15

Authorities in southwestern Pakistan said Monday that a powerful bomb blast struck a police vehicle, killing at least four people and injuring 15 others.     The bombing occurred on a busy road in central Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province. Police: 4 killed in Shooting in Louisville, Kentucky

A shooting Monday at a bank in downtown Louisville killed at least four people and wounded at least eight others, police said. The suspected lone shooter was also dead. The shooting, the 15th mass killing in the country this year, comes just two weeks after a former student killed three children and three adults at a Christian elementary school in Nashville, about 160 mile (260 kilometers) to the south. Officials in Tanzania say they have arrested South African national Thabo Bester, a convicted murderer known as the Facebook Rapist. The 35-year-old Bester picked up the Facebook Rapist moniker because he used the social media platform to meet woman. He was convicted of murder for killing one of the women he met through the site and was sentenced to life in prison. Last year, it was announced that he had died in a prison fire. Air India Passenger Causes “Physical Harm” to Cabin Crew

An Air India flight bound for London from Delhi Monday was forced to return to the airport due to an unruly passenger.  An Air India statement said the passenger inflicted “physical harm to two of the cabin crew members,” causing the pilot to decide to return to Delhi.   The airline said the passenger was handed over to the security personnel upon landing.  The flight was rescheduled to depart for London on Monday afternoon.

Renewed Chemical Attacks Target Female Students in Iran

As schools in Iran reopen after the new year holiday, female students are again being targeted by chemical attacks.   It is not immediately clear who is responsible for the poisonings, but some Iranians suspect that their own government is the likely culprit.   The attacks have targeted schools across the country and students are poisoned by unknown substances that spread through the buildings, according to media reports. Sixth Body Found in French Alps Following Avalanche

French rescue services have found a sixth body following an avalanche southwest of Mont Blanc in the French Alps and have now called off their search, local authorities said on Monday.  The avalanche occurred in the middle of the day Sunday on the Armancette glacier, which is near the village and ski resort of Les Contamines-Montjoie.  The rescue team ended their search because they knew of no other missing persons, said Emmanuel Coquand, spokesperson for the authorities in the Haute-Savoie region. Taiwan said Monday it is closely monitoring as China carried out a third day of military exercises.     Taiwan’s military said China sent dozens of warplanes and 11 warships toward Taiwan as part of the drills that began Saturday.     Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said China’s military was simulating sealing off Taiwan and simulating strikes against important targets on the island.  Japan’s defense ministry said Monday the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong conducted air operations in waters close to Japan’s Okinawan islands on Sunday. Boat With 400 Migrants Adrift Between Greece, Malta

A vessel with around 400 people on board is adrift between Greece and Malta and is taking on water, support service Alarm Phone said Sunday, after a sharp rise of migrant boats crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa.  Alarm Phone said on Twitter they had received a call from the boat, which departed from Tobruk, in Libya, overnight and that they had informed authorities. Third Whale in a Month Beaches Itself, Dies in Bali

A 17-meter-long said Sunday, making it the third whale that beached itself on the Indonesian island in just a little over a week.  The male sperm whale was found stranded on Yeh Leh beach in west Bali's Jembrana district Saturday afternoon.  "We are currently trying to pull the carcass to the shore to make it easier for the necropsy test and we will bury it after the test is concluded," Permana Yudiarso, a local marine and fisheries official, told AFP Sunday.  This is the third whale that has beached itself in Bali... Reports: Tesla Plans Shanghai Factory for Power Storage

Electric car maker Tesla Inc. plans to build a factory in Shanghai to produce power-storage devices for sale worldwide, state media reported Sunday. Plans call for annual production of 10,000 Megapack units, according to the Xinhua News Agency and state television. They said the company made the announcement at a signing ceremony in Shanghai, where Tesla operates an auto factory.
