Former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok is calling on the international community to keep pressure on the warring sides in the Sudan conflict. Hamdok says the kind of engagement that enabled evacuations of foreigners could help bring a lasting truce. He spoke during the 2023 Mo Ibrahim Governance weekend in Kenya. The first international cargo shipment with medical supplies landed Sunday in Port Sudan. A second ethnic Uyghur man has died this year from among the 50 or so Thailand has been holding in detention center limbo since 2014, amplifying calls from rights groups for their release and resettlement. The World Uyghur Congress announced the death of Mattohti Mattursun, also known as Muhammad Tursun, on April 24. It says the 40-year-old was transferred from the Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Center in Bangkok to a local hospital on April 21 but died the same day. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has renewed a call for Afghanistan’s Taliban to remove curbs on women's rights to work and education as he prepares to convene a meeting of envoys from several countries Monday to discuss the situation in the strife-torn nation. The two-day closed-door gathering in Qatar's capital, Doha, will discuss a "common way forward" on how to engage with the Taliban in the aftermath of their latest edicts banning Afghan women from working with the U.N. and other aid organizations. Officials say at least people three were killed and 10 were injured in India when a building collapsed Saturday in Bhiwandi. India Today reports that a man was rescued Sunday, about 18 hours after the collapse. Rescue operations were ongoing to recover any other people who may be trapped under the rubble, according to authorities.

A gas leak in a factory in India on Sunday killed at least nine people and injured 11. Police have sealed off the area in Ludhiana in Punjab, and emergency workers are on the site. Details of he incident are unfolding.

Attempts to ban books in libraries and schools in the United States nearly doubled last year to 1,269 from the prior year, the highest number of attempts in 20 years, according to a recent report from the American Library Association. Books that have LGBTQ themes are the most likely targets, according to the report. The issue of which books are in a library and school has become a flashpoint in communities across the U.S. with conservative lawmakers and groups saying they are turning to banning books to protect children from pornography. Turkey's first astronaut will travel to the International Space Station by the end of the year, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday. Air force pilot Alper Gezeravci, 43, was selected to be the first Turkish citizen in space. His backup is Tuva Cihangir Atasever, 30, an aviation systems engineer at Turkish defense contractor Roketsan. A U.S.-sponsored youth festival opened Saturday in Ethiopia with the theme “Be Inspired, Own Your Future.” The two-day festival is being held just months after a bloody two-year civil war ended in Ethiopia's Tigray region and as peace talks begin with the rebel Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Residents and survivors of a massacre in a Burkina Faso village said Saturday 136 people including women and infants were killed, blaming the country's security forces for the April 20 attack.
