A military helicopter crashed Saturday in a residential neighborhood of Mali's capital, Bamako, after returning from what the Malian army say was an "operational mission." The crash was confirmed in a statement on the Malian army's official Facebook page. The "attack helicopter" crashed at 1:10 p.m., "in a residential area of Bamako," according to the statement. The mystery of one of the world's worst international maritime disasters has been solved off the coast of the Philippines. The wreck of the Montevideo Maru - a Japanese transport ship sunk 80 years ago by an American submarine during World War II – has finally been found.  The Montevideo Maru was carrying 850 prisoners of war and about 200 civilians who had been captured by the Japanese in Papua New Guinea in 1942. Myanmar's government in exile is working to establish air defense warning systems for the public after the bombing of a village in the central part of the country killed nearly 200 civilians, including 38 children, 10 days ago, a top official of that government told VOA this week. "It is essential for us to find ways to stop the Myanmar junta's deadly airstrikes on civilians," National Unity Government Human Rights Minister Aung Myo Min told VOA. The United States evacuated its diplomats and their families from the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum early Sunday and has temporarily suspended embassy operations, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement late Saturday in Washington. Blinken said he directed the temporary closing of the embassy because of “the serious and growing security risks created by the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces,” which has caused a significant number of civilian deaths and injuries, the statement said. The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday preserved access to the abortion drug mifepristone while a lawsuit challenging the use of the drug plays out in lower courts. The high court issued a brief on Friday evening granting emergency requests from the Biden administration and the drug's manufacturer, Danco Laboratories, to continue to allow women to access the drug. The reclusive Taliban chief said Friday that he would not allow foreign interference in his Islamic governance in Afghanistan, come what may.
