Police in California say a woman was killed and four people were wounded in a Los Angeles County shooting shortly after the arrival of the new year. Hawthorne police say a male victim who suffered gunshot wounds was transported to a hospital from the scene near a shopping mall. Kenyan police have recovered the body of a man believed to have been attacked and killed by a lion while riding a motorcycle near a national reserve in the south of the country. Police were notified by community members of an abandoned motorcycle along a road near the Marere forested area near the Shimba Hills National Reserve. A police report Monday says officers saw lion footprints that led them from the motorcycle to a thicket where they found the remains of an unknown man. Klee Benally, a Navajo man who advocated on behalf of Indigenous people and environmental causes, has died. His sister, Jeneda Benally, said her brother died Saturday at a Phoenix hospital at age 48. His cause of death was not disclosed. Klee Benally was among the most vocal opponents of a Flagstaff ski resort that more than a dozen tribes consider to be on sacred land. The Mexican actor who gave voice to the character of “Mama Coco” in the popular Pixar film “Coco” has died. Ana Ofelia Murguía was 90. Mexico’s National Fine Arts Institute announced Murguía’s death Sunday without providing a cause of death. “Coco” brought Murguía to an international audience late in her life when it was released in 2017. She voiced the soft-spoken great-grandmother of a boy discovering his family’s musical history. But Murguía had a long acting career in Mexican film, television and stage productions. Police in New York City say five people died when the car they were in crashed on a parkway in Queens. The New York Police Department says the Mazda was heading north on the Cross Island Parkway when it collided with another vehicle just before 6 a.m. Monday. Photos from the scene show the car overturned on the roadway. The driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized in stable condition. Police did not immediately identify the five people who were killed. An investigation into the crash was continuing.

Japan has issued tsunami alerts after a series of strong earthquakes shook western areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a quake hitting Ishikawa and nearby prefectures Monday, one of them with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4. Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV warned torrents of water could reach as high as 5 meters, or about 16.5 feet, and urged people to flee to high land or the top of a nearby building as quickly as possible. Reports of damage were not immediately available.
