The race for the White House officially begins in less than two weeks. And despite some prolonged jockeying over the election calendar, the long primary season will once again begin in Iowa with a caucus process that has served as the lead-off presidential voting since the 1970s. The Republican process this year is largely unchanged, but Iowa Democrats were forced to completely redo their caucus and presidential delegate selection process after the chaotic caucuses of 2020.

Health officials say at least two dozen people in 14 states were sickened by salmonella poisoning tied to recalled meat snack trays sold at some Sam’s Club stores. Five people were hospitalized. Fratelli Beretta USA is a New Jersey meat processing company that has recalled more than 11,000 pounds of Busseto Foods brand ready-to-eat charcuterie meat products because they may be tainted with salmonella. The meat trays are labeled “Bussetto Food Charcuterie Sampler Prosciutto, Sweet Soppressata and Dry Copa" and have a best-by date of April 27.

A week after vetoing a ban on all forms gender affirming care for minors in Ohio, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine has signed an executive order effective immediately barring Ohioans from gender-affirming surgical interventions until they're 18. The governor said medical professionals have told him such surgeries aren’t happening anyway. Las Vegas police have arrested a man and his girlfriend in last month’s shooting that killed two homeless people and wounded three others. Cristobal Omar Perez and his girlfriend Kylee Au Yong were taken into custody on Thursday on charges of murder and battery with a deadly weapon. Officers are working to identify a third suspect. Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado has announced that he won’t seek a 10th term in Congress, saying he wants to spend more time with family. Police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines say U.S. actor Christian Oliver and his two daughters died in a plane crash near a tiny private island in the eastern Caribbean. Police said in a statement that the crash occurred Thursday just west of Petit Nevis island near Bequia as the plane headed for nearby St. Lucia. A pair of strays have landed in the doghouse after being caught on video causing more than a quarter-million dollars’ worth of damage at a Houston car dealership. KTRK-TV reports that one of the dogs was captured in early December and the second was caught on New Year's Eve. Both dogs are being held by the Houston animal control shelter and the first captured dog has been cleared for adoption. The northeast is preparing for a weekend winter storm that threatens to dump a messy mix of snow, rain and ice. It also raises the possibility of ending a nearly two-year drought of significant snowfall in major cities like New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. The National Weather Service says localized accumulations of snowfall could exceed one foot in areas of higher elevation. Also of concern is ice — with up to a quarter of an inch forecast for parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said Friday that more than 500 gun purchases have been blocked since a new gun law requiring stricter background checks for young people went into effect in 2022. The bipartisan law passed in June 2022 was the most sweeping gun legislation in decades and requires extra checks for any gun purchases by people under age 21. The man charged with killing seven people at a Fourth of July parade in 2022 asked to again be represented by public defenders after firing them last month. That’s led to worry and frustration for some students and parents. New York City subway service was disrupted for a second day as transit workers labored to remove two trains that collided and derailed. The crash happened at about 3 p.m. Thursday when a northbound 1 train carrying about 300 passengers was switching from the express track to the local track at the 96th Street station on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
