The lethal injection of an Oklahoma man set to die next month has been paused for 100 days so that a hearing can be held to determine if he's mentally competent enough to be executed. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals issued a 100-day stay of execution late last month for 61-year-old James Ryder. Ryder was scheduled to be executed Feb. 1 for his role in the 1999 killing of a mother and son in southeast Oklahoma over a property dispute. The London Zoo has begun its annual animal census. Obedient penguins lined up to be counted Wednesday while an endangered Sumatran tiger cub playfully gnawed at a chalk board with his name on it. The zoo will tally about 14,000 animals over two days as a requirement for its license. Everything from alpacas to zebras will be added up. A Georgia state agency has chosen a general contractor to oversee a $189 million project to raise Savannah's towering suspension bridge so that larger cargo ships can pass underneath and reach one of the nation's busiest seaports. Police are working to identify and arrest the shooter of an imam outside a mosque in Newark, New Jersey. Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said the cleric was shot after 6 a.m. outside the Masjid Muhammad-Newark Mosque. There have been no arrests. It’s unclear what led to the violence and if the imam was targeted. Gov. Phil Murphy identified the victim as Imam Hassan Sharif. He was listed in critical condition at nearby University Hospital. Residents of a Kyiv apartment building are salvaging what they can a day after a Russian missile attack set it ablaze, tore off parts of its facade, and gouged a crater next to it. Two people in the building were killed and dozens were injured by the bombardment on Tuesday that also killed two other people elsewhere in the capital. Mexican authorities are searching for 31 migrants from five countries who were abducted from a bus near the Texas border over the weekend. Federal Security Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez said Wednesday that the National Guard, Army and Navy are participating in the search, but there have been few advances. On Dec. 30, armed and masked men stopped the bus on the highway that connects the border cities of Reynosa and Matamoros. Sierra Leone’s government says former President Ernest Bai Koroma has been charged with treason for his alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt in November. Authorities said Wednesday that Koroma has also been charged with misprision of treason, which is concealing knowledge of treasonable acts.
