Armed men have broken into the set of a public television channel in Ecuador as it broadcast live and threatened people. The men with faces covered entered the set of the TC Television network in the port city of Guayaquil and shouted that they had “bombs.” Noises similar to gunshots could be heard. Ecuador has been rocked by a series of attacks including explosions and the abduction of several police officers after the government imposed a state of emergency in the wake of the apparent escape of a powerful gang leader from prison.

Congo’s constitutional court has upheld the results of last month’s election that declared President Felix Tshisekedi the winner, rejecting a petition to annul the vote. The court called a petition by opposition candidate, Theodore Ngoy to redo the vote unfounded. Ngoy, who finished with less than 1% of the vote, was the only candidate to file an appeal. Tshisekedi will be sworn in at the end of January. Tshisekedi won reelection with more than 70% of the vote as opposition candidates and their supporters questioned the validity of the results.

Mourners are gathering in Dallas to remember a longtime Texas congresswoman. The funeral for former U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson was held Tuesday at Concord Church in Dallas. Johnson served in Congress for 30 years. She died at the age of 89 on Dec. 31. People on Monday streamed by as her body lay in state at Dallas’ Fair Park before a wake later that evening. A U.S. Navy sailor has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for transmitting sensitive U.S. military information to a Chinese government’s intelligence officer. Wenheng Zhao, who is also known as Thomas Zhao, of Monterey Park, was sentenced in federal court in Los Angeles on Monday. He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of receiving a bribe in violation of his official duties. He was also fined $5,500. Authorities say a firetruck responding to a fire at a fast-food restaurant crashed into an SUV and rolled onto its side Tuesday in southern Illinois, injuring three firefighters. Belleville fire Chief Stephanie Mills says the firetruck collided about 5:50 a.m. with an SUV near Belleville East High School and flipped onto its side. Mills tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the SUV’s occupant was not injured in the crash, but three firefighters suffered minor injuries. Two of them were treated and released from a hospital...
