Brazilian police say that a suspect has been arrested in the brutal killing of an American art dealer who was the co-owner of a prominent gallery in Manhattan. The 75-year-old Brent Sikkema was found dead on Monday with 18 stab wounds in his Rio de Janeiro apartment. An estimated 320 journalists around the world were imprisoned because of their work toward the end of 2023. That's from the Committee to Protect Journalists, which on Thursday issued its annual census as of Dec. 1, 2023. The committee has been doing this since 1992, and last year had the second-highest number of journalists held because of their jobs. Only 2022 was higher. A New York midwife who gave nearly 1,500 children homeopathic pellets instead of required vaccinations has been fined $300,000. The state health department said Wednesday that Jeanette Breen knowingly gave children the pellets and falsified their immunization records. Authorities in Kenya say a donkey cart carrying a suspected improvised bomb has blown up at a checkpoint on the Kenya-Somalia border, killing one Kenyan police officer and critically wounding four others. A police report says the cart pulled by two donkeys and ridden by one man passed the Somali checkpoint of Bula Hawa and entered Kenya territory Thursday. Congress is expected to extend current spending and keep the federal government open with votes in the Senate and House on Thursday, avoiding a shutdown and punting a final budget package until early March.
