A petition filed by five voters seeks to bar former President Donald Trump from the Illinois Republican primary election ballot in March. The objection claims he is ineligible to hold office because he encouraged and did little to stop the violent Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021. A second bridge connecting Detroit and Canada over the Detroit River won’t open for travel until fall 2025, months later than anticipated. Officials said Thursday that the timetable has been affected by construction disruptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gordie Howe International Bridge project began in 2018 and was scheduled to be completed in 2024. It's named for a Canadian who played hockey for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. A Georgia sheriff’s deputy was fatally injured when he was stuck by another law enforcement vehicle during a police chase. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Sheriff Eric Minix was killed in the Thursday morning crash. Georgia law enforcement were chasing a stolen vehicle, and the pursuit continued into Alabama where the fatal crash occurred. A claim of responsibility for the bombings in Iran that killed at least 84 people has circulated among jihadists online, with the attack being attributed to the Islamic State group. Migrants from several countries abducted from a bus and held by armed men for days near Mexico’s border with Texas were released by their captors, not rescued as initially reported by authorities. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Thursday that those responsible “decided to let them go.” The 32 migrants were from Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Honduras and Mexico. The president says that the migrants were left in the parking lot of a shopping center in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, and that no arrests had been made.
