An Arkansas sheriff's deputy has been fatally shot and a suspect is in custody. Arkansas State Police said Tuesday night it was investigating the shooting of the Stone County deputy that occurred earlier that afternoon. Police did not release the name of the deputy or the suspect, or where the shooting occurred in the north Arkansas county. A news conference on the shooting was expected later. A Stone County deputy was fatally shot in 2019 when responding to a domestic welfare check.

(Bloomberg) -- Manhattan home prices rose for the first time in more than a year, as surging high-end sales propelled the market and lower mortgage rates set the stage for a broader recovery in 2024.

Purchases closed at a median of $1.16 million in the fourth quarter, up 5.1% from a year earlier, according to appraiser Miller Samuel Inc. and brokerage Douglas Elliman Real Estate. It was the first annual increase since the third quarter of 2022, the firms' data show. Читать дальше...

Fighters from an ethnic minority group battling Myanmar’s military government say they shot down a helicopter believed to be on a resupply mission in a combat zone in the northern state of Kachin. Rayner Pike, a retired reporter for The Associated Press for over four decades, has died. He was 90. Surrounded by family at the end, his Dec. 26 death at home in Arlington, Massachusetts, set off a wave of tributes from former co-workers. For the first time in the United States, turbines are sending electricity to the grid from the sites of two large offshore wind farms. The joint owners of the Vineyard Wind project, Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, announced Wednesday the first electricity from one turbine at what will be a 62-turbine wind farm 15 miles (24 kilometers) off the coast of Massachusetts. America’s employers posted 8.8 million jobs openings in November, down slightly from October and fewest since March 2021. But demand for workers remains strong by historical standards. Disney has reached a confidentiality agreement with activist investor ValueAct Capital Management, garnering its support for the company’s board nominees as it continues to deal with a proxy battle with Nelson Peltz. A salt patch on the island of Kauai is one of the last remaining locations in all of Hawaii where sacred salt is made by Native Hawaiian families following methods that are several centuries old. This sacred salt can only be traded or given away. It can never be sold. Climate change, air pollution and littering by tourists and visitors to the neighboring beach are all threats to this practice. Members of the 22 families who continue this tradition and fighting to keep these threats at bay and pass on this sacred practice to future generations.
