Heavy fighting is raging in central and southern Gaza as fears mount of a regional escalation following a strike in Beirut that killed one of the top Hamas leaders. The strike was widely blamed on Israel but it’s implications for the war remain unclear. Israeli officials have not commented on the strike Tuesday that killed Saleh Arouri, the most senior Hamas member slain since the war in Gaza erupted nearly three months ago. Authorities have arrested a 10-year-old Northern California boy on suspicion of shooting to death another child with his father’s gun. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says it happened Saturday afternoon in the Sacramento suburb of Foothill Farms when the boy went out to his father's truck to get him some cigarettes and spotted a gun. Authorities in Hawaii say a man shot and wounded a woman, stole a car at gunpoint and was later killed in a shootout with police that left two officers wounded. Honolulu Police Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan told a news conference Monday that the suspect led police on a daylong chase across the island of Oahu on New Year’s Day. He says officers shot the man near the University of Hawaii's main campus in Honolulu. The man died later at a hospital. The police chief says a fourth man was injured by a police vehicle. U.S. authorities say a border crossing on the most direct route from Phoenix to the nearest beaches will reopen Thursday, one month after it closed in response to a large migrant influx. A congressman and a senator’s son have jumped into the race for the Utah U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mitt Romney. Republican U.S. Rep. John Curtis announced his campaign to KSL-TV after initially saying he would not run for Senate. Brent Orrin Hatch also announced his candidacy Tuesday. Hatch is one of six children of the late Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, who retired in 2019 and died in 2022.
